Gandalf begins to wonder about the strange behavior of individuals in Bree, and decides to investigate - knowing that the hobbits will catch up with him in a few days. He and Aragorn get valuable time together, to plan their next move and consider additional options to present to Elrond.
After some time, the Hobbits do arrive - after having quite an adventure in the Barrow-Downs. Gandalf introduces them to Strider, and they consider their next move.
(Gandalf does not know it, but the Ringwraiths avoided Bree because of his presence - they are on the surrounding roads, though)
Gandalf fears that Ringwraiths are most likely on the road to Rivendell and south to Isenguard. After learning more about the Nazgul from the evil men in Bree, he wants to avoid those two roads at all costs.
Decision
What should Gandalf do?
- Travel north into the wilderness, towards Goblin Town
- Travel south into the wilderness, into the old forest - looking for Tom Bombadil
- Stay in Bree, and await the attack from the Ringwraiths.
