Welcome to the ever-so-wonderful world of 3.5 Dungeons and Dragons (4.0 isn't nearly complete enough yet).
Our story will begin in or around Waterdeep[1] the largest city-based political power in D&D. We'll stick to a fairly slim list, only choosing gender, races, and classes provided by the Player's Handbook. It would get way too complicated if we went much deeper than that.
