You figure that you won't lose any chances you have with Jennifer by not sitting next to her for the hour bus ride. You walk over to Sarah, and sit next to her, dropping your backpack in the aisle next to the seat. Sarah looks at you.
"Tough choice, was it? Jennifer or I? Ah. I kid, I kid." She pulls out her iPod and kicks up a movie for the two of you to watch. Midway through the ride, however, the battery dies.
"Ah, hell. Sorry Jack. Hope you don't mind at all that the battery died." She frowns, and puts the iPod back into her pocket. She starts to watch out the window, and you look back to Jennifer. She's fallen asleep, head on the window. Sarah pushes lightly on your shoulder.
"Take a look outside." She points outside of the window, an you look out. The bus has been traveling quite a distance, and you're now out in the desert. You gaze at the beautiful scenery, dotted by cacti and the occasional set of rocks and life.
"Wow. That is really something." You admit out loud. Sarah nods in agreement.
Suddenly, the back of the bus jumps. A few kids scream, startled by the sudden jolt. You glance back, checking on Jennifer. Her head lurches forward and hits the seat in front of her hard, and her hands fly up as a reaction. Sarah gasps, and grips to your arm. Everything is oddly silent, and the driver comes on through the PA.
"Sorry kids, that was just a bit of a bump, nothing to be worried about. From here on out, it's just smooth sailing. The caves are in visible distance, I think we should get there in about ten minutes." He turns off the PA and it crackles out. Sarah still grips your arm, her skin a deathly white. She looks up at you and instantly realizes what a fool she looks like. She tries to play it off, but you explain that you understand. She nods and thanks you. You check back again and see that Jennifer looks fine, just shaken up.
With the caves rapidly coming up, your teacher stands up. She starts to tell your class about the caves and the estimated age, along with local legend that something lives deep, deep inside the heart of the cave. She laughs and dismisses it, before describing the crystalline formations that you'll study. Sarah finally lets go of you and eases back into her seat.
Finally, the bus starts to slow as it reaches the entrance of the cave. You look out the window. The cave is massive, with the mouth being tens of hundreds of miles wide, and unnervingly high. Sarah turns to you.
"Jack, I don't like this place. Something feels off. It has all day. When we're in there, please stay with me, Jack. Don't wander off. Promise me?"
"Yeah, I promise. Don't worry Sarah, I'm sure it's nothing."
She smiles, and stands up. After you get up and let her out and into the line, something catches your eye. A glimpse outside. As you look, your vision is suddenly filled with images of dead bodies. It fades, and you are left staring blankly. Again, Sarah has to get your attention, putting her hand on your shoulder. You look back and see that her face is completely covered in blood. You scream and fall backwards into the seat, and she begins crawling up onto you.
Her empty eye sockets seem to ooze blood and fear at you, and you listen helplessly as something other than her speaks in Sarah's voice.
"Help me, Jack. He-" You shove her off, and look at her again. The blood is gone, and she is perfectly fine.
"Jack! What the fuck was that for!?" Sarah shouts at you, and you tell her what happened. She seems genuinely disturbed and concerned. You promise her again to not leave her, and then the two of you step off the bus.
