Alison sighed. "In September I'll be a senior in high school. I was held back a grade in kindergarten, so I'm already 18."
Tom's expression turned serious. "Obviously you can't go to school, but I can still help you study for your GED. So from now on we'll do an hour of study time daily. Wouldn't want to have you skimp on that."

"Sure thing," Tom grinned. "One moment."

For this session, Tom bound Alison's legs but not her arms, and positioned her so she could sit up. The game was long and complex, but Alison's two Kings trapped Tom's lone King in the corner and she forced a victory.

"Well done," Tom said in an impressed tone. "You're quite smart."

Alison giggled. "I like to think so."

"What level were you at, educationally?" Tom inquired.

In spite of herself, Alison was curious. "And then what?"

"Then we figure out if you want to continue on by studying for a college degree," Tom replied. "You don't have to, if you don't want to, but I would encourage it. I wouldn't want my future wife to be looked down on as just an uneducated pretty girl." Tom's eyes twinkled, and Alison could tell he was half-joking.

"You... want to help me study?" Alison mumbled, still confused. How can this kidnapper be so damn nice?

"I do indeed," was Tom's warm reply. "What do you need help on the most?"
