Gandalf realizes that their only hope against the orcish horde and Balrog is for him to take the Ring. He could sacrifice himself to help them get away, but without him... the Fellowship would surely fall apart. Gandalf is worried about Boromir.
Instead, Gandalf orders Frodo to hand over the ring. For some reason, the little hobbit hesitates - which only frustrates Gandalf. He bellows - "The Ring! Give it to me!" At this point, all of the hobbits and the rest of the party are scared - they do not know what they are about to face, so they do not know how scared they should be.
The Balrog appears - and instantly, the entire party knows they are doomed. Frodo is not handing the ring over - instead, he is clutching it close to his heart and backing away from Gandalf. Everyone is focused on the Balrog, so it is hard to know who witnesses what happens next - Gandalf running Frodo through with Glamdring, slipping the elven sword through the neck opening in Bilbo's mithril shirt. Frodo is instantly dead, and Gandalf grabs his limp fist just as it opens - allowing the ring to fall into the palm of his hand. In the hand of a Maia, the one ring instantly lights up with power. It becomes a white-hot, searing bright light as he slips it onto his finger. Instantly, the Balrog, trolls, and every ord in Moria is under Gandalf's control.
A moment later, members of the party notice that Sam is cradling Frodo's dead body.
Decision
What should Gandalf do?
- Use the forces of Moria to attack Mordor.
- Disband the Forces of Moria, so they can do no more evil in the world.
- Use the forces to attack the two armies of men, Rohan and Gondor, before they bring the world to ruin.
