In the equipment section of the port, you can buy equipment needed for your ship to run properly. Such things include crew, food, and water. Cannons and ammunition are not required, but are generally recommended.

If you do not have at least the optimal navigation crew, which is listed when you go to buy a new ship in the shipyard, three times as much food as crew, and three times as much water as crew when you click the "Set Sail" button, the game will automatically take you to the equipment page with a warning (or multiple warnings, as the case may be) to buy the equipment that you are missing and a button to set sail anyway. It is generally recommended that you heed this warning. Once you have all of the necessary equipment, the game will automatically put you out at sea.

The raft does not need equipment; any equipment bought for it will be a waste of money.
