Spark is a fledgling social work/social service group at Chennai Mathematical Institute. The conception and name are due to Bodhayan Roy, a first-year student at CMI. Currently, around 20 CMI students are actively involved with Spark activities.

Activities
Current acitivities: CCCL Hexaware
CMI students are currently working on a project to educate children of construction workers at the CCCL Hexaware site. There are currently about 20 children there who seem to be interested, and the current plan is to teach them on Sundays. The 20 includes about 8-10 Telugu children, 8-10 Oriya cum Bengali children and 2 from Jharkhand. An idea of the recent activities can be obtained by looking at the January 2007 report.
An alternative path for Spark, viz teaching at local schools, has been shelved for now. Teaching in city schools has also been scrapped.

Past activities
The main activity of Spark members in August-December 2006 was educating the children of construction workers involved in building the CMI hostel. Check out Educating the kids: the story for more details.
