Lots of people, specially the newbies in jailbreak ing dont know the difference between a tether Jailbreak and untethered Jailbreak. Well to allow it to be quick and distinct, Tethered Jailbreaking is a sort of Jailbreak that still depends on the software used to Jailbreak a system each time it must restart, meaning, each time the tethered unit is hard booted, switch off or ran out of battery it cant boot on a jailbroken state until you link it to the computer and run the application you used to Jailbrake it, repeating some of the process of Jailbreaking. While on the other hand, Untethered Jailbreak, all units under this Jailbreak may independently restart itself anytime, preserving its Jailbroken state without needing the application used to Jailbreak it.
