Near—or Nate River— (24 August 1989) is a character from the Death Note manga. As one of L's protegies, he performs the one thing that L cannot do: he brings down Kira in the end of the manga. Unlike L, Mello, or Raito, Near is extremely rational and does everything with proof. He's someone who needs hard evidence before he decides to make a move on something, unlike the other individuals (who tend to work on intuition). He's polite with a tendency to be a little snarky at times, and even a little smug, but that never gets ahead of him. One of Near's most interesting attributes is the fact that he does seem to completely and utterly lack the passion of the other individuals.

Background

Near grew up in Wammy's House, a place that happened to house orphans who also happened to be prodigies. Though they were an interesting group of kids, they grew up and were trained in order to take the place of the greatest detective in the world, L. Near, along with Mello, was one of the shining members of this house. He was known for his rationale, abilities to put together puzzles quite easily (and quite literally), and ability to play games with considerable ease. Unlike Mello, Near was a rationale and amazing strategist, and it was this that would eventually help him in the future. He could, after all, think fifteen to twenty steps ahead. And he needed to, especially since he did lack that inherent intuition.

When it came to the current most famous detective dying, Near and Mello knew they had to take his place. However, they were also in a battle against one another—only it was more of a battle of Mello trying to be better than Near, than Near meeting up to him in the competition. The two worked separately to bring Yagami Raito, the one they believed to be Kira, down, and in the end, it was Mello who lost his life.

Near, too, came very close to losing his life, but the shinigami Ryuk ended up killing Yagami Raito instead of him. His life was saved, and it can be assumed that he took up the mantle of L soon after.

In Purgatory

Near arrived a few weeks ago and immediately moved in with L and Raito. He does not trust Raito, but unlike Mello (who eventually arrived), he did not wish to show his inherent dislike of the man. He knows that he will eventually have to act against Raito, and showing that he does not trust him will only serve to work against him.

Mello has just shown up and moved in with them and persists in their great "rivalry." Of course, Near does not see it as that rivalry and does not completely understand why everything needs to be that way with Mello. He has a rational explanation for it, but even Mello tends to work a little outside of rationality when it comes down to it.
