Born November 19th, Zaraki Kenpachi is the infamous Captain of the 11th Division of the Gotei 13 from the manga/anime Bleach. Quite easily the most deranged and violent of the Shinigami squads (not counting the defectors to Hueco Mundo), he's the only Shinigami to have attained his title of Captain through killing the previous Division leader.

Background

Standing at a towering 6 feet 6 inches, Zaraki Kenpachi exudes power. His Captain's robes are torn and tattered, possibly because their previous owner was killed by Kenpachi in a duel for leadership. His skin is masses upon masses of scar tissue, from his many bloody battles. His most visible scar is on his face - running from his hairline to his chin, a long ragged cut that was obviously stitched without care for appearances. The most interesting feature on Kenpachi is his bizarre hairstyle. Worn almost straight back from his head in stiff black spikes (a very time-consuming style), bells cap the ends, adding nearly 3 inches to his height. Kenpachi wears an eyepatch over his right eye, even though he has perfect vision in both eyes. He loves a good fight, and the power-drawing eyepatch allows him to brawl with weaker opponents. Slung across his back is a very ragged-looking sword, his zanpakutou. All Shinigami carry zanpakutou, and by forming a close bond with the soul of their sword, can increase their power and perform special attacks called BanKai. Kenpachi, believing in his own titanic might and general distaste of fighting with an ally, doesn't care to know the name of his sword. It's his opinion that he doesn't need a named zanpakutou or BanKai. Yet Kenpachi swings the sword with a great strength and skill, despite the sword being so uncared for the edge is dull and chipped.

Kenpachi is aggressive to a fault. He lives for fighting, and likes to draw out such battles to soak up as much enjoyment from them as possible (hence his nameless zanpakutou and power-sucking eyepatch). It's also not uncommon for him to mention that loss of life and injury are nothing more than the price you pay for a good fight. Back in the Sereitei, Kenpachi's second-in-command is Kusajishi Yachiru, a very tiny little girl who calls him 'Ken-chan' (who thrills to see him fight and gets around Seireitei clinging to his back). It's rather bizarre to see the terrifying Kenpachi with Yachiru (as he dotes on her like a father), but it's an obvious sign that even Kenpachi has a soft side. He's all around very coarse, and utterly sinister in battle. His only weapon is the unnamed zanpakutou, which he swings with a killer's instinct. His spiritual pressure is also so high that it's rumored that no blade can peirce his skin. However, very few people have attempted to prove this little fact, so it remains a mystery. He's also very perceptive of people, and can pick up on traits in a person that usually go unnoticable. Also, in battle, he's rather adept at making up battle strategies on the fly. Yet, despite his perception and adaptation, Kenpachi admits that he HATES to think in battle, and freely admits that he has little-to-no sanity and zero common sense. He's also always thinking with his fists and sword, and if he doesn't think a situation will boil down to a fight, he'll purposely start one. On top of all this he has the worst sense of direction ever given to man or Shinigami. Kenpachi couldn't find his way out of a wet paper bag if his life depended on it. Kenpachi also has to get up very early in the morning simply to do his hair, which takes an inordinate amount of time to style into his trademark spikes. (The bells are particularly difficult to attatch.)

Originally a nameless soul from the worst neighborhood of the Rukongai, he took his last name from said neighborhood, Zaraki. It was during this time, in his lawless neighborhood of theives and murderers, that he took up his sword and killed many enemies. He had no first name, until the day he met a little girl from an equally nasty neighborhood whose parents had been murdered. He named her Yachiru, and picked out a name for himself - Kenpachi is the title bestowed on a master swordsman. He adopted little Yachiru, and the pair started up their quirky father-daughter relationship.

Some time later he made his way to the Seireitei. Defeating the previous 11th Division Captain, Zaraki gained through his brute force the seat on the Gotei 13. He's the only member of the Shinigami who didn't take the usual exam to gain his position. It's suspected that he named Yachiru his second-in-command out of his affection for her, mainly because the 3rd seat of the Division, Madarame Ikkaku, is stronger in his power than Yachiru yet retains a lower rank than she. It's often stated that the 11th Division is the most physically aggressive of the 13 Shinigami squads. Nearly everyone in the Division is obsessed with fighting in one way or another. ---
