Background
Bleach hasn't told us how many Shinigami came to join the Gotei 13. We know, however, that Ikkaku followed Kenpachi when the captain overthrew the former leader of the 11th squad. Since we saw in the flashback that Yumichika (with a kimono and bad hair) was watching Ikkaku and the captain, it can be assumed he joined with his fellow subordinate.
