Haruhi grew up in a small suburb of Japan, and upon entering her freshman year of high school announced to the class that she's only interested in the supernatural - espers, aliens, time travelers, that sort of thing. In general, people didn't take her seriously, and she went around joining and quitting every club in school before her classmate Kyon suggested she just make her own. And thus, the SOS Brigade was formed! ...although their actual goals were unclear, and Haruhi's method of recruitment usually involved physically dragging people to the meeting room and declaring them members.
But the thing was, that strange stuff DID always seem to happen around Haruhi. In fact, the members of the SOS Brigade were an alien, an esper, a time traveler, and Kyon. The club went around doing really REALLY weird shit, like filming a low-budget magical girl series. And stuff ALWAYS seemed to go a bit awry whenever Haruhi got really, really bored which... tended to happen more often than not.
Haruhi wound up creating a parallel world with only herself and Kyon, but he convinced her to return them to the original world because he wanted to see all their friends again.
