Background

Riku is a boy who wished so hard for adventure he nearly destroyed his world.

Riku grew up on a tropical paradise world called Destiny Islands. He and Sora had been close since childhood, and the two quickly befriended Kairi when she appeared on their world. From then on, Riku began to dream of other worlds and the adventures they could have there. Although the three friends were happy where they were, Riku was adamant that they should build a raft and see what else there was in the universe. He wished for this so strongly that Riku foolishly opened the door to the heart of the Islands and let in the Heartless. The island was engulfed in darkness, Riku lost his destiny as the wielder of the Keyblade and the three friends are violently separated amongst the worlds. This begins the chain of events of Sora's journey, the Keyblade and the door to the light.

When the island was taken over, Riku had accepted the darkness and was brought to Hollow Bastion. He met the witch Malificent, who convinced Riku that, in his absence, Sora had replaced him with new companions and forgotten all about their friendship. Riku became resentful of Sora and accused his friend of doing nothing to find him or Kairi. Each time Sora met with Riku, the other boy had become more and more engulfed by the powers of darkness. Riku allowed this force to consume him in order to help Kairi, who had lost her heart.

By the end of the first game, Riku was calling himself Sora's enemy and stood directly between hime and saving the worlds from the Heartless. SRiku's anger and sadness was so deep that Ansem, the villain who created the Heartless, completely posessed Riku's body and used it as a host to battle Sora. When Sora defeated him, Riku turned back to normal and sealed himself behind the door to light to fight the remaining Heartless Forces. He told Sora to "take care of her".

After escaping from beyond the door, Riku stumbled upon Castle Oblivion. Throughout the course of ‘’Chain of Memories‘’, Riku fought the darkness in his own heart. He was eventually rescued by the “witch” Nobody, Naminé. She offered to make Riku forget the darkness inside of him and start from only the light. But he refused, telling her he’ll walk between dark and light (not as twilight, but as dawn) on his own.

This doesn't last for long! In the events surrounding ‘’Kingdom Hearts 2’’, Riku worked with DiZ and Naminé to try and reawaken Sora. He was given orders to capture the Organization XIII member Roxas, Sora's Nobody. The two had a confrontation, which Riku lost and realized the only way he can help Sora is by sacrificing himself to the darkness. Riku gave in and was able to defeat Roxas, but not without losing his body to the darkness. By doing this, he took on the outward appearance of their old nemesis, Ansem. Riku disappeared for most of the second game, and showed up towards the end to rescue Kairi and Naminé from Saix. This lead to his reunion with Sora and Riku’s understanding that he could no longer run away from his friends and his own shame.

Eventually, with the destruction of DiZ’s device, Riku was able to regain his true form-- just in time to fight the final battle against Xemnas! Victorious, the three friends were reunited happily in their childhood home.
