The Play is the Thing

that Will Catch the Conscience of the Player

— Adapted William Shakespheare's Hamlet

Thing

In this variant, players during the day vote to test, not kill, one of their number. If the testee is a werewolf, then she dies and the players may continue testing untill they test a human. However, werewolves don't kill during the night either... They convert their victim into a werewolf, who then turns against her former allies! Can you track the changing alliances and mutating playerscape?

Problems with this Variant

This variant was attempted on 1/7/2006 and was an absolute failure largely because players did not actually lynch each other and players deserted.

Observations suggest that Thing might work better if

  1. Lynching during the day phase is MANDATORY either by calling for a testing vote at days end and lynching whomever recieves the most votes or by not ending day phase at all untill a lynching occurs.
  2. The game is LARGE. Because the wolves numbers increase every single night and villager numbers decrease every single night. This game slants even more heavily the power differntial toward the wolves.
  3. The Roleplay element is heavily storyline driven. Some situation has to occur that DRIVES the players toward lynching or it will never occur. People are not removed so motivation is lacking....

Other suggestions include:

  • Slowing down the conversion of wolves to someother time schedule.
    • Comment I personally did not find the speed of the game to be the most discouraging factor. The lack of anything HAPPENING was the problem. Thing by nature will produce Faster Games Thats not a bad thing.
