Thorley Wash - 2 Buzzards over the wash were joined by 2 others as they drifted north; also a pair of Cuckoos (at last!) observed in nuptials (some ropey photos);a definite purring Turtle Dove heard briefly (but could not be located; at least one reeling Grasshopper Warbler at usual site giving ropey views from a thicket; at least 9 Common Whitethroats singing and 6 Sedge - but no Garden Warbler as yet.

Please consider making the entries for your bird sightings onto the club's wiki system now available on the "Recent Trial" page that you can reach by the second button on the left hand column. The webmaster thinks that as this trial involves updating the technology at no cost it might be a good time to change. It needs to be demonstrated that this change would be a good move for us now we are on the brink of the new decade. We should like to have more direct contributors. It should be the views of the frequent users of wiki and the website that the club takes note of.

Please express a view also about the on line bird report for 2008 that has been available for a week or two on the fifth button in the left hand column. Data used to compile the text comes only from the emails to the club's yahoo site, the entries onto this wiki and records fed back to the club from the national reporting systems. In the last two or three years the club has been encouraged to receive more records. This should have more valid views with more contributions. It is hoped that this "Recent Trial" should help in at least maintaining the present levels.

Hatfield Forest - 1 Common Gull, 2 M Swan, 23 Cad Geese, 197 Mallard, 4 Coot, 10 Moorhen, 46 Black-headed Gull and a single Kingfisher. 2 Teal circled once before returning in the direction of SAL as the North end is still completely frozen.  Also 1 Common Buzz, 6 Bullfinch and 1 Marsh Tit. Buzzard - now daily between Spellbrook, Thorley Church and Mathams Wood with one or two birds seen on five occasions this week but never seemed to be covering any ground. Only 4 kestrel sightings and one sparrowhawk over the same period could start pushing Buzzard to the top of my regular Spellbrook/Trims BoP count. It may not seem like many sightings but these are from my teabreaks and lunchtime only totalling a meagre 40 mins a day. - Graeme J. Smith

Hatfield Forest Lake - Mute Swan pair at chosen nest site facing bird hide. Grebes of course. Both Woodpeckers, 16 Swallow, 6 Sand Martin and a House Martin. Three Grey Lag and 8 Canada Geese including one with a head much like a Grey Lag. Tufted Duck but no Teal. All the usual corvids. No winter thrushes but at least 5 Mistle Thrushes and many calling/singing Song Thrush. Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff and Blackcap.

Rushy Mead to Wallbury - 2 KINGFISHER, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Green Woodpecker, 3 Treecreeper, 3 BRAMBLING east over Rushy Mead are easily my best site species to date, 2 Siskin, 6 Little Grebe (4, 200 yards North of Spellbrook Lock and 2 more 50 yards South of Lock, 7 Bullfinch in four goes, 5 Goldcrest, 1 Imm Cormorant South, c,120 Black-headed Gull over South with at least 11 Common Gull, 62 Redwing seemed a decent count but only 13 Fieldfare and a single singing Mistle Thrush - Graeme J. Stansted Airport lagoons - Common Sandpiper moving between all three lagoons. Mallard with 8 young. Four pairs of Mallard. Drake Gadwall until it flew off. Eight Teal until they flew off. 1 Mute Swan, 17 Coot, few Moorhen. Stock Dove, Blackcap, Wren, Jay. Swallow 5 plus a few Sand Martin later. Skylark, Robin, Chiffchaff, Blackcap. No Grebes. Trims Green/Lysander Park - 203 REDWINGS west in 5 groups, c.300 BLACK-HEADED Gull, c.100 COMMON GULL and at least 30 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on fields c.800 metres SW.  Lysander Park farm buildings were surrounded with birds with 20+ HOUSE SPARROWS, 7 PIED WAGTAIL, 22 YELLOWHAMMER, 54 LINNET, 37 GOLDFINCH, A stunning 51 GREENFINCH, 47+ CHAFFINCH, 78+ STARLING included 47 over West 3 GOLDEN PLOVER over NW  Amazing there was so many small species hanging around… considering I saw (probably) the same female SPARROWHAWK three times. 3 TREE SPARROWS calling, low over South are a county tick for me.

Blounts Farm - 17 REDWING in tallest trees brings my daytotal to an incredible MINIMUM OF 861 birds,  2 RED-LEGGED PARTRIDGE, 15 GOLDEN PLOVER- 4 joined by 2 more small flocks of 6 and 5 at the same spot JonoF found them the other day, 2 MISTLE THRUSH over South along with only a single MEADOW PIPIT. A very large feeding flock of c.150 CHAFFINCH just South-west of Mathams Wood.

Trims Green + surrounding land from 0700 Hrs - Mist very thick this morning YELLOW WAGTAIL 3 - One flew up from close to the road at Lysander Park entrance and flew low over my head heading east. A pair grounded amongst Mipits left east along trims South field just off Sacombs Ash Lane but were close to the ground and didn't look to be going anywhere, Corn Bunting 1, Yellowhammer singing all around, three large flock of linnet plus a few straglers totalling around 130 birds, grounded mipit all around with numerous birds on fences, trees etc. REED BUNTING 9 two sang the whole time they were within ear-shot. This is easily my highest site count as i've only had a handfull on this ground in the last 5 years, Hares 7, Pied Wagtail 13 feeding on the flooded NE edge of trims North Field. Tufted Duck 11(12) on fishing lake closest to Thorley Church, Greylag 2 heading towards Michaels Mead Pond over Moor Hall Barn, Swallow 1 - resting for a moment on wires next to Moor Hall Barn - Graeme J. Please consider making the entries for your bird sightings onto the club's wiki system now available on the "Recent Trial" page that you can reach by the second button on the left hand column. The webmaster thinks that as this trial involves updating the technology at no cost it might be a good time to change. It needs to be demonstrated that this change would be a good move for us now we are on the brink of the new decade. We should like to have more direct contributors. It should be the views of the frequent users of wiki and the website that the club takes note of.

Please express a view also about the on line bird report for 2008 that has been available for a week or two on the fifth button in the left hand column. Data used to compile the text comes only from the emails to the club's yahoo site, the entries onto this wiki and records fed back to the club from the national reporting systems. In the last two or three years the club has been encouraged to receive more records. This should have more valid views with more contributions. It is hoped that this "Recent Trial" should help in at least maintaining the present levels.

The club will next meet on Monday 4th January at the Bricklayer's Arms at 8.00 pm.

Trims Green/Lysander Park - 203 REDWINGS west in 5 groups, c.300 BLACK-HEADED Gull, c.100 COMMON GULL and at least 30 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on fields c.800 metres SW. Lysander Park farm buildings were surrounded with birds with 20+ HOUSE SPARROWS, 7 PIED WAGTAIL, 22 YELLOWHAMMER, 54 LINNET, 37 GOLDFINCH, A stunning 51 GREENFINCH, 47+ CHAFFINCH, 78+ STARLING included 47 over West 3 GOLDEN PLOVER over NW Amazing there was so many small species hanging around… considering I saw (probably) the same female SPARROWHAWK three times. 3 TREE SPARROWS calling, low over South are a county tick for me.

Blounts Farm - 17 REDWING in tallest trees brings my daytotal to an incredible MINIMUM OF 861 birds, 2 RED-LEGGED PARTRIDGE, 15 GOLDEN PLOVER- 4 joined by 2 more small flocks of 6 and 5 at the same spot JonoF found them the other day, 2 MISTLE THRUSH over South along with only a single MEADOW PIPIT. A very large feeding flock of c.150 CHAFFINCH just South-west of Mathams Wood.

Mathams Pit - To my great surprise the Pit is being refilled. 327 BLACK-HEADED GULL, 201 COMMON GULL - nice to get a monster count before November 112 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS including a distant blue-ringed individual (finished “B”), 1 Adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL looking more than just a bit poorly, 4 LAPWING and 2 MEADOW PIPIT.
