Sam is my English nickname, the name I usually use to my boss, colleagues and lab students.

Sources

My nickname has several sources. The first was the from The Lord of the Rings. There Sam was the nickname to a character Samwise Gamgee. He had the personality of brevity and honesty.

A second source is the movie The Day After Tomorrow, there Sam is also a brave and nice guy. And thanks to god (and director), finally he survived!

A third reason is that Sam, like my official name Shu, both have 3 letters and intial is S. Thus my name on published paper is always S. Li, no way for confusion!!
