Sam is my English nickname, the name I usually use to my boss, colleagues and lab students.
Sources
I chose my nickname from several sources. The first was the from The Lord of the Rings. There Sam was the nickname to a character Samwise Gamgee. He had the personality of brevity and honesty.
A second source is the movie The Day After Tomorrow, there Sam is also a brave and nice guy. And thanks to god (and director), finally he survived!
A third reason is that Sam, like my official name Shu, both have 3 letters and intial is S. Thus my name on published paper is always S. Li, no way for confusion!!
