Alanis was born the daughter of a busy tradesman. Growing up, Alanis found herself travelling the world with her family. Due to her family's constant moving around, she never gained any sense of "home" or any true friends, but that all changed when her family travelled to Vinay del Zexay. In the city, she became friends with two local children by the names of Melville and Elliot. The three became close friends, often playing together and mimicking the Six Mighty Knights of Zexen. They called themselves the "St. Loa Knights", and Alanis dubbed herself "The White Maiden", a derivative of her idol Chris Lightfellow's nickname.

Unfortunately for Alanis, her time with Melville and Elliot soon came to an end, and her family once again packed up and prepared to move. However, they were captured by the Lizard clan along the way and brought to the Great Hollow. Although they were being held "prisoner" by the Lizards, who had grown wary of Zexens due to the ongoing Second Fire Bringer War, the Lizards treated Alanis and her family well, and she even befriended some of them. When Hugo and the Fire Bringer came to the Great Hollow, she overheard that her friends from Vinay del Zexay, Melville and Elliot, had enlisted to help them and was easily convinced to join them as well.

Alanis and her family moved to Budehuc Castle to aid the Fire Bringer, and she made fast friends with a few of its inhabitants. She retained a deeprooted friendship with Melville and Elliot, and the trio often went on outings together during the war. Elliot was ecstatic to be reunited with his friend, as was Melville. However, the latter of the boys often found himself worrying about her safety and asked Hugo not to send her on dangerous trips. During their time together, the three made a pact that when they were strong enough to fight the monsters scattered across the plains, they would venture back to the Great Hollow.

After the Second Fire Bringer War ended, Alanis found herself once again dragged away from her friends and being towed around the world by her parents. Alanis was devestated to leave Melville and Elliot behind, seeing them as the only true friends she'd ever had. Years went by, but she never forgot her friends in Vinay del Zexay. During her travels, Alanis took up a few hobbies, such as studying Rune magic. She became quite good with runes, especially those of the healing variety. She also began to study combat and, with the proper training, grasped the fundamentals of battle incredibly quickly.

More time passed by, and Alanis blossomed from a little girl into a young woman. She found herself leaving behind her parents' nomadic lifestyle for something more stationary, and during that time, she found herself back in Vinay del Zexay. It wasn't long before she once again met up with Melville and Elliot, and soon enough, the three set out on a journey across the Grasslands. During that time, the St. Loa Knights were brought together once again, and the group became closer than ever.

During their journey across the Grasslands, they heard tale of the Princess of Mailan and her fight to liberate her kingdom from the clutches of Harmonia, and without hesitation, the St. Loa Knights headed into battle in hopes of aiding the Princess.

• Martha sometimes told Alanis's future during her time at Budehuc Castle and once said that Alanis "would grow up to be a pretty woman just like her".
