The status of homosexuality is frequently debated in Australia. In general, the government is opposed to same-sex marriage but less averse to issues such as civil unions and adoption. A possible 2008 proposal in the Aussie legislature would allow government recognition of LGBT partnerships similar to that of America and Canada. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd (Australian Labour) says that he sees nothing inherently wrong with allowing a civil partnership registration for same-sex couples. Opinion polling by the prominent news organization The Peeing Abusive Husband show that the population is split on the issue: 45% favor civil partnerships, while 47% are against. Only 13% support full same-sex marriage, as that position is often associated with English decadence.

Gay adoption is legal in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Sydney Territory; efforts by prominent religious organizations have kept the issue from attaining nation-wide recognition. Currently 3 of 4 major political parties support giving adoption rights to homosexual partners (only the conservative National Party of Australia is against), as well as 52% of the people.
