Handful of Hope is the eighth mission in Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War.

Mission description

After several weeks without Yuktobanian military activity, Wardog squadron is ordered to patrol Akerson Hill due to a threat from light resistance. They will fly in two pairs, Blaze-Kei Nagase and Hans Grimm-Alvin H. Davenport.

Mother Goose One

While on patrol, Blaze (the player) and Kei Nagase encounter a C-5 Galaxy transport aircraft with the callsign Mother Goose One. They have been damaged and their radar has been disabled. They are attempting to head to neutral North Point, but they must cross an Osean gauntlet of automatic anti-aircraft weaponry. The system locks on and fires at all detected enemy aircraft within range. Mother Goose One's IFF signal is not working properly, so the AA system could attack Mother Goose One.

Mother Goose One will follow Blaze. The player must avoid all the circles on radar, as these will put Mother Goose One in range. During this, an enemy pilot states that if they down the C-5, there will "be a statue built in their honour." This makes Nagase suspicous of what might be on the aircraft.

Escort

After Mother Goose One navigates the AA system, Yuktobanian fighters are seen on radar, followed by more. By now, Grimm and Chopper have arrived to assist Blaze and Nagase. Wardog squadron must intercept the fighters and protect Mother Goose One. During the dogfight, the pilot and co-pilot are hit and killed. "Tommy", a secretary on board, must take control and make an emergency landing. The "cargo", a VIP, relays information to Tommy over the radio.

Tommy finds a spot to land, but there is a problem. Several windmills block the landing area. Wardog squadron must eliminate them. If the player accomplishes this, the mission will be completed. The C-5 lands and the crew were safe. They were then rescued by the 8492nd squadron.
