[edit] History
As with many nations, the actual founding of a nation which can be called Xyrael is a mystery. The first tribes to have settled the lands are modern Lucca, known as the Xyraelites, were scattered and constantly warred with each other for control over resources and territory on which to hunt. The earliest settlement discovered, located fifty miles south of modern Lucca, date back to two thousand years before the Imperial Decree of Xerus. These early settlements show that early Xyraelites were polytheistic in belief, having many temples, and they worked as a community. Early mills and storage units and wells were publically accessible, and housing was built in large, apartment-like structures.
By the year -200 PI (Pax Illumina), early Xyraeli tribes had evolved into prospering, independent city states. Around this time period a series of expansionistic wars were waged by the city now known as Dacia. Dacian Legions were able to capture many provinces, and started a period terms as the Age of Strife. For 150 years each city-state raised armies and fought with each other, leaving their populations decimated and their fragile economies broken. Lucca, a smaller trade reliant city-state capitalized upon the opportunity and, with the assistance of large mercenary armies and slave levies was able to capture the Xyraeli peninsula. In the year 0 PI (equivalent to modern 228 AD) the leader of Lucca was elected Autocrat of Imperial Xyrael, by the Decree.
The Imperial Decree of Xerus officially abolished all forms of self-governance among city states in favor for an Imperial system. A census was taken, a tax system formulated, an army raised, and Magistrates appointed to city-states. Imperial Xyrael continued to expand for a period of 300 years until, in the year 334 PI, Xyraelite armies clashed with an organized barbarian force to the north. Unable to break the enemy, whose superior cavalry outmatched Imperial infantry tactica, the Empire receeded into a period of bureaucracy and corruption. By 900 PI, the Empire had fallen into significant decline.
Multiple rebellions broke out as Magistrates pushed for a series of reforms to give themselves more freedoms. Governorships became hereditary positions, and the power of the Autocrat had been severely limited. All new Autocrats of the Imperium were to be approved by the Imperial Diet, a body of Magistrates who had become the equivalent of noble families. All actions taken by the Autocrat were to be approved by the Diet.
These limitations prevailed well into the Xyraeli Renaissance. As artists and ideas began to swell, the Autocrat became a despised figure, even if impotent. Revolutionary forces sought to topple the Imperial government, and the Diet found itself defeated by their own reforms. The Autocrat, unable to levy his own armies, was forced to abdicate. The Magistrates raised armies within their cities and dug in for a brutal war, the deadliest war to date. Revolutionary forces were able to topple several noble families and support for their cause grew, but the Magistrates were able to gain the aid of merchants provided they give concessions. Merchant funded armies supported the nobles and ultimately prevailed over the Revolutionary forces. In 1290 PI (1578 AD) the Imperial government was officially dismantled and the Imperial Diet was renamed the House of Nobles, and became the ruling body of the nation. With the support of a growing merchant class the new Noble Republic began to grow in power.
Demands for luxuries began to increase, and slaves began to dwindle, so in 1460 PI the Noble Republic went to war with the Confederation of Edela. Edelan armies were unable to beat back the initial assault along the beaches north of Xyrael, and a string of highly successful campaigns swept away all major opposition. By 1474 PI the states of Angelis, Ryza, and Paramar had fallen to the Noble Republic. A new era of superficial prosperity would last for nearly 300 years until, in 1765, right-winged radicals merged with left-winged radicals to form a coalition movement.
Termed Social-Fascism by the Nobles, who had embraced a parliamentary noble republic, the nobles sought to quash the movement by force. based within the densely forested regions within Xyrael, the Social-Fascist support base steadily rose as disatisfaction with the stagnating economy and class disparity. Social-Fascist forces waged a highly successful guerilla war until finally, in 1775, the movement was able to capture the city of Macharia.
From here the movements power rose astonishingly quickly, although the Social-Fascists continually avoided committing their forces to pitched conventional battle, relying on guerilla tactics and unconventional methods such as bus bombings and assassinations. In 1778 the faction took a new stance on it's war with the Nobility, and Social-Fascist forces led by Commander Alexei Duthorian spearheaded an assault against the noble house of Valedor. After brief, excessively bloody fighting with over 20,000 casualties in the first two hours of fighting, the city was taken and the Social-Fascists organized a committee to establish a legitimate government.
The nobility, reeling from the setback, soon found itself fighting battles within it's own cities as sleeper cells of Social-Fascists spread propoganda covertly, and the nobility was forced to flee many of their cities. In 1788 the capital of Lucca fell, and by 1790 the Social-Fascist forces exerted control over 90% of Xyraeli territory.
