The Third Caropsyne Pontanore, (Caropsyne: Eda Pontanore infrenon Carops drettino) is a nation and major power comprising of territories on the continents of Thearea and Polythia, with various island holdings. A social democracy, the Pontanore is divided into the Pontanore States of Mainland Carops, Ardalia, Casona, Euvodora, Famagosca, Phosmara, and Permenta.

History

Munero agricultural societies were the first signs of civilisation in pre-historic Carops. Gingar was founded by Muin settlers some 5600 years ago in the late Great Agricultural Period. With the defeat of the Totorians in CY 970, Carops was able to develop significantly, fighting off various subsequent invasions of Tirans and Azabeans, to be established as a dominant power in Thearea. There was no sense of national consciousness at this point, as the "nation" of Carops could solely be identified as land which was governed by the Muin communes in a loose confederacy based on shared racial and linguistic ties.

All of this was to change in CY 1578 with the arrival of the Pelsai, a maritime people who settled in Carops and oversaw the establishment of centres of power within the country, and awakened the sense of nation within the inhabitants of the areas. Pelsai dominion over Carops resulted in the establishment of Vaelcs or kingdoms, of which there were originally four, Gingar, Sanche, Droganl, and Takann. Large swathes of land to the South of the Vaelcs, which is now classified as being a part of Carops, continued to be ruled by Muin peoples and the Porthin. Doruum-Cason was at this time mostly inhabited by Muin and not considered to be linked to Carops.

Pelsai domination of Carops lasted for approximately 1400 years, with the establishment of a rich society and culture. Gingar was, by the height of Pelsai power, the dominating force in Carops, which the Vaelc of Droganl also exerting large amounts of power under the Firnan Dynasty. Notable monarchs of this time include Firna, Queen of Droganl (CY 1791-1845), Firnan of Droganl (CY 1995-2036), Aeblean, King of Gingar, and Gedethena. However, the danw of what is known as the Second Pelsai Age saw the end of the harmonious Vaelc system, Aeblean of Gingar inherited the throne of Sanche by marriage and was forced into war with King Maagen of Takann over the kingdom. Gingish forces were heavily defeated and Aeblean forced to kill himself, resulting the breaking of the amicable relationship between the Pelsai peoples of Carops. The subsequent short-lived Occupation of Gingar also continued to break these bonds.

The Second Pelsai Age was at its peak of power when the Lindites, a seafaring people of Gesintan origin, landed at Rumarghe, following the establishment of the Fifth Vaelc of Bevenn, some sixty years beforehand. The Lindites were able to overcome the forces of Droganl, and occupied the Vaelc, drawing them into a deadly conflict with the Pelsai of Gingar, which by this point had unifed with Takann and Sanche to form the first recognisable nation of Carops, which was known as Unified Carops. The defeat of this nation, under the Kartt-Golsan Dynasty, led to the collapse of Pelsai power in Carops and the establishment of the Lindite dominion, and the eventual formation of the nation of Carops in a single entity. The Lindite Othæglin founded Fornænda shortly into the reign of the Lindite Kings. Their language merged with existing dialects to form the tongue known today as Standard Caropsyne. The Phett people also settled in Carops during this period, in the areas around Ariatra, the Phettlands, and the Kimmlish coast. They and all the other various races in Carops combined to eventually form the fairly diverse Caropsyne People, whose racial background is broadly mixed, with pockets of homogenous ethnicity. This led to a long, peaceful period of Caropsyne history under the rule of the continuous House of Fornænda.

During the Middle Period, Carops became an economic and cultural centre, with the rise of the merhant classes. However, the reign of Heth VI saw the fragmentation of the kingdom, with the rebellion of Haramantas Garel "The Gorkhan" Zophelento against the monarchy. The Gorkhan seized much of the south of the Kingdom of Carops, attacking the Phett population and destroying much of ancient Ariatra. The death of Heth VI saw the usurption of the Caropsyne throne by the Gorkhan, a period referred to as the Despotate. After a short period as Despot of Carops, the Gorkhan was removed by a popular revolt and the House of Fornænda was restored, with prosperity resuming.

Carops began to acquire an "empire" under the rule of King Aether II, some 400 years ago, with the final seizure of Doruum-Cason and its annexation by Mainland Carops. Doruum-Cason had remained a broadly independent Pelsai kingdom up until this point. This conquest continued with the establishment of Caropsyne Dominion over Holod by the merchant Harias Golmer and a mercenary force loyal to the Caropsyne Merchants Company. Carops also began to take territories in the continent of Polythia, following the establishment of the large Caropsyne Imperial Navy. The territories of Polythia Interior, and Jajiland were conquered during this period, some 350 years ago. The Pontanore consisted of these territories alone for another 200 years.

The last autocratic monarch of Carops was Aldrand (5567-5610), whose son King Olimand the Great, agreed to the downgrading of the monarchy from a Royal Family to merely a Royal House, with a democratic government governing the country's affairs. The first elected government of Carops was established 167 years ago under Melthred Consvané, a popular lawyer. Democracy continued to thrive in Carops for another 90 years, before the overthrow of Dorias Rormold during the National Emergency, and the establishment of Fostana Carops. What followed was sixty years of government under the Fostana, the unelected former Upper House of the Caropsyne parliament, which was compromised of hereditary peers, clerics, judiciary and various other figures. Durind this time, the lower house, the Pontiana was shut down. The Fostana led Carops into numerous conflicts against her neighbours and was generally seen as corrupt, oppressive, and cruel. However, for much of the Fostana period, the council enjoyed the widespread support of the Caropsyne people. During the Fostana period, Carops sezied control of the former Loslakia colonies of Koyti and Gregon, as well as taking a portion of the collapsed Ziabach Empire.

Opposition to Fostana tule erupted into a spontaneous socialist uprising in several parts of Mainland Carops in the summer of CY 5759. Communists under Garel Hermalas seized a number of coastal cities with the support of large numbers of foreign supporters. Fighting between communist militias and the Fostana-supporting Caropsyne Army led to fears of an expanding civil war engulfing all of Carops. However, the arrival of foreign peacekeeping troops to re-establish Fostana control end the insurrection after two months, but also did much to discredit the regime. The period surrounding the insurrection has since generally been seen as one of embarrassment and shame.

Recent History

The Fostana Period ended with the collapse of the council in CY 5770 as Carops' unchallenged leadership. A marginal election victory following this saw Dr. Phodric Dormond become the first premier of the Second Pontanore. The new Pontanore found itself rapidly embroiled in the First Liberalian War, following which the Caldari territories of Vyyk (now Sorana) and Saba (now Fermanta) were seized. Dormond's fall from grace over the Jaj Oil Crisis led to the appointment of Dr. Haldric Maldian as premier, cermenting the Dormondist Period as a marked period in Pontanore Politics, characterised by conservative, statist views.

The cold war between the Pontanore and the Curian Bloc culminated in the eruption of the Second Liberalian War and the Third Liberalian War, both of which saw little damage inflicted upon Pontanore forces or territory. The Pontanore's inclusion in the Soccersia Pact with Soccersian and the Caldari State led to a gradual period of stability. This was upset again with Soccersian breaches of past agreements and the subsequent Pontanore-Soccersian War, in which the Pontanore was victorious. A series of crises following the conclusion of the Third Liberalian War saw the Maldian Government subjected to constitutional uncertainty. The eventual Pontiana Siege saw a tragic and violent conclusion to the Dormondist period, with Maldian himself a victim.

As a reaction to a perceived military-government complex consuming the Pontanore government, controversial former Foreign Minister Miria Seranoda won subsequent elections, becoming the Pontanore's first female or socialist premier. Her contentious policies of political-vetting and the destruction of state organs claimed to be synonymous with Dormondism caused lively debate on the future of the Pontanore. This period also saw the acceptance of greater autonomy for the Pontafosti and Pontasti, as well as the finalisation of a dual-culture identity for the Pontanore, embracing both Caropsyne and Ardalian culture and languages. The Seranoda Period is generally viewed within the Pontanore as a Golden Age, in which the State was at its largest and most influential. The culmination of Settlement Programmes within the Pontanore had successfully created a widespread Caropsyne and Ardalian ethnic population, which was instrumental in installing a nearly-universal "Pontanore Culture."

The period immediately following the decade of Seranoda's Government saw the collapse of the Second Pontanore during the short government of Dr. Alza Permentanna. Troubled by its unprecedented size and ethnic complexity, the Pontanore Government failed to suppress a number of serious armed revolts within the state, particularly in Chonoré, Holod, and Gregon. Combined with a lack of international support resulting from the outbreak of the Caldari-Latagonian War, the Second Caropsyne Pontanore ceased to be an effective state shortly after the appointment of Dr. Goriath Moscana as premier following Permentanna's resignation. A decision by Moscana to seek Latagonian assistance in protecting Mainland Carops resulted in the effective occupation of the territory by Latagonian forces, as the Pontanore government became increasingly unable to rule. During this four-year period, known within the Pontanore as "The Interlude," there was no unified government over the remaining territories of the Pontanore which survived foreign colonisation. Large areas of Pontanore Charlia were absorbed into Prasser, whilst Holod and Gregon were permanently lost. A National Government in Euvodora ruled effectively as an independent state in the absence of central authority, and in opposition to the Moscana Government.

The refounding of the Pontanore (Caropsyne: Eda Resenterra), headed by the People's Council of Pontanore Citizens saw spontaneous independence for large areas of ethnic-Caropsyne and Ardalian territories from the control of foreign powers. The new government, under the direction of its first premier Dr. Almas Josc, successfully recreated the social-democratic state format which is now commonly associated with the Pontanore as a nation.
