Sol Stern AZA

Sol Stern AZA #65 was founded as Portland AZA in 1936 in Portland, Oregon. Portland AZA was one of the first AZA chapters on the West Coast. Active from the foundation of the chapter until the late 1990s, it became inactive in the early 2000s. It was resurrected in the mid 2000s by pioneers such as Ethan Balgley, Alex Menashe, Noam Amir-Brownstein and Blake Morell. Portland AZA was renamed Sol Stern AZA #65 after pioneer Ben Kahn's great-uncle, the conservative journalist and education reformer Solomon "Sol" Stern of New York City. Since then, Sol Stern has been dominant on Evergreen Regional Board, sending many Alephs to the position, including three current board members and past Aleph Godols Samuel Blauer Miller and Benjamin Joseph Molloy. Sol Stern has dominated the annual EGR AZA Cup spirit competitions and the AZAA Basketball Tournament. Sol Stern is known for strong chapter spirit and a heightened sense of brotherhood and filial love. Historically, Sol Stern has sent a high number of Alephs to international programming, and maintains a strong presence at the local Bnai Brith Camp in Oregon. Sol Stern also enjoys close ties with the philosophies of Danbergism and Basedgodism, and many Sol Sterners self-identify as Jewish-Basegodist. Sol Stern is also the home of garden gnomes Claudius, McArthur and Gerald. Arguably the best chapter in international BBYO, Sol Sterners are well aware that, "When the moose goes up, the mouth goes shut!"
