History
Frank Fierman AZA has existed, in its current state, since 1980. Before that year, chapters in Atlanta Council were organized by grade, lasting only four year periods. Thus, in 1980, Fierman was rechartered. The date it was originally founded, however, is unknown. The chapter is named after Frank Fierman, a man recognized for his contributions to the Atlanta Jewish community.
Traditions
- Hoo-Hah- A longstanding tradition of Frank Fierman, Hoo-Hah is performed at every council/regional meeting. The chapter godol counts to three and each fiermanite shouts "hoo-hah" as they cross their legs. As the chapter shouts "hoo," the members stomp their right foot on the ground and begin to lift it up. On "hah," the right leg is lifted, turned, and placed on the left knee. At International Convention, the Atlanta Council delegation introduced Hoo-Hah to the international order, but it endures in Atlanta as Fierman tradition.
- Candle Carving- each year during the State of the Council Address, it is traditional for Fiermanites to carve wax Shabbat candles with their teeth. These candles will often be used as Life candles later in the member's BBYO career.
- Bash Night- a monthly program where members compete to eat the most chicken wings. Whoever consumes the most wings does not have to pay for their meal. The current record is 105 wings set by Scott Zweigel.
- Chapter Convention- an annual overnight campout at Lake Lanier in north Georgia. Usually occuring in late May, chapter convention marks the end of the Fierman programming year. Life ceremonies are held here, as well as the State of the Chapter address and a final initiation ceremony for new Alephs run entirely by outgoing Seniors. Often, chapter elections are held the day the chapter returns from chapter conventions, although scheduling conflicts have altered that in recent years.
- The Last Supper- At the last dinner at the Atlanta Council Spring Convention (the last convention of the Atlanta Council programming year), the entire chapter of Frank Fierman sits at one side of the table. If available, Bible verses are recited throughout the meal. The memories of this tradition are preserved by a photograph in which nobody is looking at the camera.
