Wikisource

I'm wondering if there has been any consideration of setting up a clear area for large original source material? For example the articles from eVinaya. That way if authors wanted to include original work that would not be subject to editing they could. Because, in general, my understanding is that pages wouldn't have authors as regular documents would. Also, having source documents locked into part of wikiVinaya would prevent broken links in the future. I'm not saying that all original work should be in a separate section, just longer articles, essays, etc. BKh 17:19, 20 July 2006 (EDT)

Hello, I was not familiar with the actual meaning of wikisource, but having read a bit about it, I would say 'yes', that would be a good thing. It would remove some objections for people to work with WikiVinaya. Also it would prevent broken links as you say.
An other issue would be the copyright. In the English Wikipedia it says concerning wikisource that All texts collected are free of copyright, either because this has expired or because the text has been released under a GNU Free Documentation License.. So we could definately host old works like the 'Sacred Books of the East', and any works which are put specifically under the same licence as WikiVinaya uses. However I am not sure if for example Ajahn Brahm would want his stuff to be under the CC 2.5 licence we use here. Even though we wouldn't change it, somebody else might copy it and do so. But in that case they would still have to mention te original at WikiVinaya. Maybe something could be worked out in terms of setup of the Wikisource-section. I think maybe WikiVinaya could allow for 2 options: to put the original in a wikisource section, an put a more open fully editable version in the normal section (depending if people choose to put time into this). Also the wiki-source part could be freely incorporated into the main part in the form of quotations from it.
On Wikipedia it also says Wikisource does not host 'vanity press' books or documents produced by its contributors. For us this would naturally not work out very well, so maybe we could say that in case of a vote, at least 25% (?) of the voters should support the presence of a text at the source-section of WikiVinaya. If it doesn't reach 25% it would be removed.

I had not thought of those issues. Just to clarify, my idea was that we would have our own section of source material. So could it be made clear that authors maintained whatever copyright they wanted? The particular copyright they wanted could go at the top of the article. The talk page would be available for editing, I'm assuming. Do you think 25% is necessary? How about anyone besides the author could post it with the author's permission? Just a thought. But whatever you think best. Sincerely, BKh 20:35, 20 July 2006 (EDT)
