The WikiVinaya is an effort to set up a place where any kind of information concerning the Vinaya of the (Theravadin) Buddhist Monastic Order can be found. The goal of WikiVinaya is to compose an 'open' online editable Vinaya-ebook, convering all the rules (and related conventions) relevant to bhikkhus and bhikkhunis.

The purpose of this online editable Vinaya-eboook is that it should generate a clearer understanding among both monks and laypeople about the actual monks' rules that the Buddha laid down (according to the Theravadin Buddhist tradition). Conflicting (and sometimes strange) opinions and views on the monks' rules and life can sometimes be heard, and WikiVinaya can maybe help in clearing things up about the 'true' nature of Vinaya.

The following information can be included in the WikiVinaya:
+
Right now, WikiVinaya has 3 pages of value.
-
* General information on Vinaya as a scripture and a practice, the reasons for and background to the Vinaya.
+
-
* General Buddhist terms like bhikkhu, Dhamma, almsbowl, meditation, Sariputta, etc. Many of these articles might be copied or adapted from the Wikipedia online encyclopedia.
+
-
* Detailed information on the 227 patimokkha rules for bhikkhus and the 311 patimokkha rules for bhikkhunis.
+
-
* Detailed information on the thousands of other prescriptions, regulations and rules as contained in the Mahavagga, Cullavagga and some of the suttas of the Sutta-Pitaka
+
-
* Detailed information on the opinions of the various monks who have composed commentaries on the Vinaya during the last 2500 years.
+
-
* Differences in current interpretation and practice of these rules, as practiced in the various current monastic lineages (or sub-groups) within the Theravadin Buddhist Monastic Order. An example of this is the different interpretations of the same rules in Thailand, Sri Lanka and Myanmar.
+
-
Although these different practices can all be included on WikiVinaya, it should at all times be clear what the 'status' of a certain practice or rule is:
+
#Goal and Content of WikiVinaya
-
#Is it Buddha-Vinaya (contained in the Vinaya Pitaka)?
+
#Books - A very complete list of ebooks (internet links) and proper paper books
-
#Is it one of a number of variant interpretations of a passage or rule in the Vinaya Pitaka?
+
#Monasteries in the West - A list of western monasteries that are serious about Vinaya
-
#Is it a commentarial comment on the Vinaya, written down (many) centuries after the passing away of the Buddha?
+
|}
-
#Or is it a current practice, of which it maybe cannot be said that it has a basis in any rule contained in the scripture of the Tipitaka?
+
-

+
-
Contributing to the WikiVinaya
+
-
The WikiVinaya can be read and consulted by anybody, but if you want to contribute to WikiVinaya, and edit or add articles or pages, you should open an account. Opening an account can be done very quickly by clicking on the link on the top of this page.

When editing or adding to the WikiVinaya, an effort should be made not to mix the original 'Vinaya of the Buddha' with later interpretations, scriptures and practices. This may be done by dividing the articles up in different paragraphs, or splitting articles up in smaller articles. Contributors to the WikiVinaya are encouraged to always include references to texts in order to avoid confusion about who said what, when. The purpose of this is to make it easy for readers to make the distinction between the words of the Buddha and the various opinions and interpretations which are of a later origin and of a commentarial nature. The references should be sufficiently clear so that they can be verified by who chooses to do so.

+
-
The Vinaya Wikia is aimed at the Vinaya of the Pali Canon (or Tipitaka), so sometimes quotations in the Pali language will need to be included, but please be sure to accompany those by an accurate English translation.
