Hill Valley was founded by William Hill and the town was first settled in 1850 and was incorporated in [2005|1865]] . By 1883, it was connected by railroad to San Francisco. The Shonash Ravine Bridge was completed in the summer of 1886.

Hill Valley gained international attention when the movie, Back to the Future was filmed in Hill Valley in 1985. After the film was released, tourism was up 15 percent. Due to the increased tourism, the mayor of Hill Valley demanded that they make more Back to the Future movies in Hill Valley.
