After hearing about this, Ford became interested and they started talking. After looking at all other possible candidates (or lack of) NBC made the decision to make Knight Industries Three Thousand a Mustang. After the announcement was made, fan boys started crying and freaking out that the new KITT was not a Trans Am or Camaro.
