Captain Ash is a recurring character, having appeared in all three Timesplitters games. He is playable in the first two and appears as a main character in one level of Future Perfect, alongside the Jungle Queen.

TS1 Gesture Takes a water flask out his jacket, raises it and says "Cheers!", then drinks it all down. He throws the flask off screen then whipes his face. TSFP Gesture Makes boxing/punching movements whilst saying "Ooh! Time for fisty-cuffs, splendid!"
TS2 Gallery Adventurer extraordinaire, Capt. Ash's exploits have carried him to the four corners of the earth. He's always accompanied by the most glamorous assistants and never averse to stopping for a spot of afternoon tiffin. Just to keep the pecker up, you understand- Tally ho! TSFP Gallery On returning from his Amazonian adventures, the esteemed Captain Ash has been enjoying traditional hospitality in bonny Scotland. Although with the company of the Jungle Queen during those dark Caledonian nights it’s been less of the Robbie Burns and more of the carpet variety...

Background

Little is truly known about Captain Ash's background, though it is suspected that he served in the infantry during the Boer War towards the end of the 19th Century as a teenager, before becoming an officer and a Captain in the trenches of World War One. After the war, he retired from the military to set out on adventures of his own, travelling the world. One of his first stops would be the Amazon Jungle.

Aztec 1920

In TimeSplitters 2, Captain Ash appeared in the Aztec Level alongside lover Jungle Queen. He set out to retrieve the time crystal scattered at that location with the aid of a group of mysterious yet helpful monkeys, encountering Aztec Warriors and Stone Golems. However, his military training came in handy and he managed to enter the Aztec Temple before finding the time crystal.

Scotland 1924

In the third game he was shown again in the story during 1924 in an apparently hushed up incident involving what appears to be Russian soliders taking a Scottish isle for an unknown reason at that point in the game. He was still madly in love with the Jungle Queen, and once more was on a mission to rescue her from the island before the British Navy attacked the Russian soldiers at the island. While rowing out to the island, he encountered Sergeant Cortez, who had time travelled to that location and timeframe. The two partnered up, stormed the castle on the island, and rescued the Jungle Queen. However, Cortez went on when Ash travelled off the island, apparently rowing into the sunset with the Jungle Queen.

Egypt 1935

The first recorded appearance of Captain Ash is, ironically, his last one chronologically. He is introduced in the first TimeSplitters game, but is not a character of great importance, only appearing in the Egypt level, which reveals his search for an Ankh which he can use to stop a ritual. He appeared alongside Lady Jayne in this level. At the end of his adventures in Egypt, it is uncertain just what happened to either of them, but it is likely that Ash's adventures were far from over.

Lady Janye/Jungle Queen?

Where exactly the Jungle Queen was in the Egypt level from TS1 is not known, but it is theorised that she took on a proper name and became a dignified lady, and that lady is Lady Jayne. This idea is backed up by the Jungle Queen's gesture "You Tarzan, me Jane, let me show you how we do it in the jungle".

However, Lady Jane worked with Jake Fenton, PI in Chicago in 1932, where she owned a prominent detective agency. However we know this is not the same person because her TS2 Gallery profile says that she lived in Switzerland and attended (but later skipped) a school there "This hot-blooded socialite skipped Swiss finishing school to set up her own Private Investigation Agency in Chicago."

Quotes From TS2

Ash: Aha! The crystal! I've got you by jingo.

Golem appears

Ash: What the...Now golem let's not be too hasty!

Golem knocks him down causing Ash to drop the crystal

Ash: Good lord, the crystal!

Ash whacks him in the head with his hat

Ash: Take that, you bounder!

Ash grabs the crystal and makes a run for the bridge laughing along the way

Ash: Listen golem you can't have it! The crystals mine you know!

The golem charges towards Ash and Ash tries to escape by jumping off the bridge

Ash: Tally ho!

Golem catches him by the hand grabs the crystal and shakes Ash off sending him plummeting below

Ash: You little devil, let me go! Let...me...goooooooooo!

TSFP Quotes

  • Cortez appear from a time warp and is dropped into the ocean.

Ash: What the?

Cortez: Any chance of hand.

Ash: I say what are you doing way out here, old chap?

Cortez: I'm supposed to be on the island.

Ash: Are you sure, bean? This whole island is going to bombed to kingdom come.

Cortez: By who?

Ash: Well...by the Navy of coarse!

Cortez: Damnit!

Ash: Don't worry old boy, we've a while left. There's someone I have to find on the island first. Those Navy chaps won't attack until they get my signal.

A sniper spots Ash and fires a bullet that strikes Ash's pipe away from his mouth

Ash: What!? What, that was my best pipe! You bounders!

Cortez grabs a flare gun and prepares to fire

Ash: No! Don't!

Cortez: Get down!

Cortez fires and nails the sniper

Ash: Good shot old man! But, I'm afraid you let the cat out of the bag now.

Cortez: Why?

An explosion rocks the boat and sends Cortez flying in the air

Cortez: What's going on?

Ash: That flare was the signal. It's going to get a bit hairy from here on.

Cortez: Damnit! Alright look, if you can get us to shore without getting us killed, I'll help you find your friend okay?

Ash: Good show sir! Consider it done.

Ash row the boat to safety as the Navy shells the entire island. The two make it to the island in one piece.

  • Ash: Well, we've better make the best of things. Take this gun and lets see if we can make it to the castle in one piece. Last one alive is a big girl's blouse!
  • Ash: They've got the high ground and good cover, old boy. In the finest tradition of the British Army I suggest the full frontal..er..a..assualt that is.
  • Ash: Good morning there! Can I interest you with some castle insurance? Covers from fires, floods, and besieging armies!
  • Ash: The pygmies of Ullawonga were toughter then this!
  • Ash: Who's next, hmm?
  • Ash: Tally ho! This is the life wind in your hair and a big weapon in your hand!
  • Ash: This reminds me of the war! Such happy days.
  • Captain Ash: Well you've got the explosives old boy, it's time this door wasn't here!

Anya: Something tells me the Captain's done this before...

  • Captain Ash: Do you think that thing can be used for, say, oh, I don't know... bank vaults perhaps?
  • Ash: Hey, I know your over there! Lower this bridge or I'll give you a right good thumping!
  • Ash: Do you think that device would be usfel for getting into bank vaults, perhaps?

Triva

On the second level, Scotland The Brave, Captain Ash gives Cortez instructions on how to use dynamite. Anya then says that she thinks the Captain has "done this before." This could be a reference to the Egyptian level of the original TimeSplitters game, where the player- who had the option to play as Ash, among others- used dynamite as a weapon. However, chronologically, as Scotland the Brave is set 1924, while Egypt was set in 1935, this isn't true. (But chronology means nada in the Timesplitters world, since time travel itself is the recurring theme, and therefore this could still be a reference, just one "out of time", so to speak.)
