A ongoing theme in the group since its first assembly has been the relative musical ignorance of Gavin when it came to popular group musical trends.  This was most visible when Gavin would be clearly ignorant of Weezer knowledge past the name of their lead singer, and a lack of appreciation for Radiohead past being able to enjoy the story about how Rama had to chase after a car going to a concert.  This flaw is contrasted with the near encyclopedic knowledge of all things musical possessed by Jeremy, Kevin, and Lukas.

Gavin can be seen as eventually gaining an appreciation for music several years after the intital popularity. This was shown in the cases of Ozma, Weezer, and even the purchase of Harvey Danger's "Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone" two years after first hearing the album while riding in Stuart's car.

A less unique part of Gavin's lack of musical appreciation is shown in his inability or interest in playing any instruments.
