Jason Steffke is one of the main characters of the Control of Destiny Series and is the President of the Flying Islands of Jasonia for many years.
Character Information and Background
Jason Steffke is probably the person that changed history the most without really meaning too.
The Steffke family can trace their decendents back to the human Magi, and have lived in Autentior and Automatica for many generations. Although able to use magic, they had never been a rich or powerful family and no Steffke had ever really amounted to anything major. The Steffkes had been longtime pasifists and tried to stay out of harm's way as much as possible.
Jason, the son of Harvey and Debra Steffke, was like most Steffkes. He showed no real interest in the world around him and did his best not to interact with it. There was nothing really noteworthy about the boy. Jason helped his family run an orphange out of their family home, which was fairly busy accepting orphans during the turbulent time of cold war between the UCR and GCK.
The young boy's life abruptly changed when the orphange caught fire one night in 1994. Jason did his best to get the rest of the children outside, but found, to his horror, that his parents had perished in the flames. At the point of his highest anger, the flooring collapsed and Jason fell violently into the basement of the house, where he could see a shadowy figure walking out slowly. Jason lunged at the man, but was easily discarded into the flames. Although engulfed in fire, Jason remained unharmed. Something changed within him right then, and when he attacked a second time, the figure was thrown far forward, noticibly hurt. The shadow escaped the blaze with Jason close behind, but he was quickly lost in the night.
After the fire had reduced the house to cinders and burned itself out, Jason returned to sift through the wreckage and uncovered a safe owned by his parents, to which he knew the combination. Inside, Jason found a farewell note from his parents and a wooden stick with faint carvings, which was apparently the family's only heirloom. With this in hand, Jason lead the surviving orphans (himself now included) to a friend's house for the night, and later on to his uncle's farm in the countryside, where they stayed several weeks.
When Jason's uncle informed Jason that government agents were looking for him, Jason decided he did not want to be found and took a bus to Apolytown in Audentior, where he got a job at a stock exchange and took up residence for several years. In an incident with a local gang, Jason struck out with unseen force, revealing himselft as a psionist. Jason trained his mind furiously after this in an attempt to harness this power and discovered at his heirloom was actually a psychic channeling device from a passed age. Jason also took an interest in the social patterns of people in the city and realized he wanted to do whatever he could to help the lives of such people.
In a very shadowy incident in early 1999, Apolytown was burned clean to the ground by the Apolyton Civilization Site armies, which threw the entire region into chaos and prompted the return of Audentior as a sovern power. Jason went on the run again and found himself in Epoli town, which had an underground reputation for revolutionaries. There he met John Sager, an Automatic that was secretly plotting to make Automatica an independent nation. Jason knew nothing of this at first, and the two gained a following of supporters under the banner of the "Automatic for the People" political party.
Having such influence as it did, the government of Audentior had no choice but to recognize the party as official, and Jason transfered to the newly-rebuilt Audentior City as a senator. Having little to do for his job, Jason spent a lot of his time in the Audentior library. There he learned of the war between the Kingdom of Audentior and Jasonia Kingdom, and of the flying islands. Jason had a great interest in these events, filling his head with imges of cities in the sky.
Elsewhere in the city, Jason found Mao, a refugee from Apolytown who had started another coffee shop here. Jason and Mao were close friends, and Mao let Jason in on his dreams of opening a flying coffee shop using new antigravity technology. Jason managed to aquire technical documentation on such records and began to develop a crazy plan.
Jason resigned as a senator and returned to Automatica. He learned of the coming war for independence and managed to get himself transfered to a remote mountain outpost in Pinkania. He also put in a massive order for antigravity engines using funds from his diplomatic budget, which, thankfully, did not get noticed during the chaos of the war, which Automatica won. Through his diplomatic channels, Jason learned that communist factions inside Automatica were not happy with John Sager's leadership and were planning yet another revolution. Taking advantage of the timing, Jason activated his antigravity generators, pulling a great chunk of land into the sky and claiming independence in Feburary of 2000.
The Flying Islands of Jasonia, as they became called, were scoffed at by the Autentes and Automatics, but the very open voting and immigration policies began to make the nation strong and attract a following. When Demesos invaded Automatica, the FIoJ worked with Automatics to repel the invasion sucessfully. As nations collapsed, the FIoJ persisted and grew stronger.
Jasonia partisipated in Audentior's last-ditch attempt at reunification, but when it collapsed, the former provinces of Audentior joined Jasonia, starting a cultural revolution and also beginning the first Control of Destiny campaign, which lead to a great friendship with Bill Dusch. Jasonia was literally on top of the word, and Jason had finally achieved his dream of making a difference.
Yet, in the months that passed, the world took a slip for the worse. Nations were plagued with inactivity and Jasonia began to slip into a nation-wide recession. To counter an increase in crime and panic, Jason approved a drastic increase in the military's size and strenght, positioing forces through the nation to maintain order and keep the peace.
In these troubling times, Jason often refers to history for guidence. So, one night in August of 2001, Jason Steffke spent a very long night in his the datalinks of the palace...
Personality and Skills
A fairly weird character, Jason is usually cynical about new ideas but maintains openness in communciation. Jason used to be much more of a pessimist then he is today, but it still shows. He is a fairly friendly person and has a sense of humor many people can enjoy. Jason has self-taught himself in diplomacy, which basically means he tries to be nicer then other people during discussion. (a farily effective approach) Most notable, however, is Jason's Empath abilities, which he can use to "pick up" the emotions and intentions of friends and allies alike.
Jason has no actual attacking weapon. He carries his PSI rod into battle, which he uses to focus his mental energies into force attacks, psychic illusions, or magical spells. A PSI rod is a straight piece of wood with carvings to channel energies. On one end, it has a jewel (usually an emerald) that stores the power collected until the user needs it. Anyone with a psychic talent can use any PSI rods, although rods can be designed for a specific user to maximize mental pattern interaction. Although no one today has the skills to make a PSI rod, they aren't all that rare in the world if one knows what to look for. They are, however, rather fragile and should under to circumstances be used as an actual melee weapon.
Jason is constantly looking for new ways to use his power, which has lead to a fair variety of "skill altering" techs that he can use. One such skill improves the quality of an ally's blade, another surrounds an ally with a magical barrier, and still another type gives a friend some of Jason's own mental energies. These skills, while useful, rarely make or break a battle. Luckily, unlocked with his psychic powers also came fire-elemental magic that he can use for direct damage on his opponents in a pinch.
