The Viet Nam Air Force (Vietnamese: Không Quân Việt Nam), commonly referred to be its English language acronym VNAF, is the aerial warfare branch of the Vietnamese armed forces. It operates a wide variety of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft to accomplish its missions, including, but not limited to, aerial reconnaissance, close air support, and transport.
The VNAF employs both modern aircraft and older ones; the latter have been extensively modernized to meet the VNAF's needs in the 21st century.
Viet Nam purchases aircraft from a variety of sources, but its largest suppliers are the United States, the Russian Second Republic, the Republic of China, and the Republic of Serbia.
Many members of the VNAF receive advance training in countries friendly to Viet Nam, so its performance is largely regarded as satisfactory.
As of 2008, the VNAF has an estimated 63,000 personnel and over 2,000 aircraft. General Trần Tiến Xuân has served as commander of the air force since 2005.
