The Republic of Viet Nam (Vietnamese: Việt Nam Cộng Hòa) is the easternmost country on the Indochina peninsula in Southeast Asia. It is bordered by the People's Republic of China to the north, Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest, and the South China Sea to the east. With a population of over 86 million, Viet Nam is one of the 15 most populous countries in the world.
Viet Nam was under Chinese control for a thousand years before becoming a nation-state in the 10th century. Successive dynasties flourished until it was colonized by the French in the mid-19th century. Efforts to resist the French eventually led to their expulsion from the country in the mid-20th century, resulting in Vietnamese independence in 1954. to be continued
