- Where was your character born?
- Was it a big city or a small hamlet?
- What was the climate like? Is the character used to hot or cold temperatures?
- Is it coastal or mountainous?
- Are the people Mostly Good, Mostly Neutral, or Mostly evil?
Family
- Who are your parents? Are they still alive?
- Are they rich? poor?
- Does the family have a good repuration? a sour one? Why?
- Are there any famous or infamous ancestors?
- Does the family hold its members to a particular system of ethics?
- Does the family practice a particular religion?
- What is the family's view of the government? Supporter? Revolutionary?
- Who holds the power in the family?
Instruction
- What sort of Education did the Character receive and from whom?
- Has the character held any jobs/apprenticeships?
- How did the character come to be a member of their class?
Life Events
- What events shaped the characters life during childhood?
- Were there any pivotol events in the characters life? (i.e. events that if they had been settled in a different way, the character would not be who they are today)
Relationships
- How does the character feel toward their family, now and in the past?
- Does the character have siblings? If so, what is their relationship like?
- Who are the character's Friends? Are they the type to forge few close relationships or many more distant ones? Is finding friends easy/difficult?
- Has the character made any rivals/enemies?
- Did your character have an instructor that played a role in their life? What is the relationship there?
- Is your character a follower of a particular diety? How does the character feel toward this entity?
etc
Obviously a background doesen't have to answer all of these questions explicity, however if it comes up in a game your character should be able to answer any of these. A good background should give the reader the ability to at least imply an answer to all of these.
Background Format: I'm not picky, if you just want to make a list of points that's fine, or if you want to make a great narrative of your character's life, that's probably better. Also remember posting a "day in the life" here can help you become familiar with some of the problems your character might handle in everyday life and how they conduct themselves (And also just might earn you some extra XP)
Once you're happy with your background, you can send it to me in whatever way you prefer
