An Interview with the Bard
Home
• Where was your character born?
o “An innocuous village on the western border of Walstad.”
• Was it a big city or a small hamlet?
o “It was a small village, no more than fifteen houses total, and a few more buildings for social functions such as a two-story inn, and a town center with a lovely statue of Terrema in the middle.”
• What was the climate like? Is the character used to hot or cold temperatures?
o “It was always a little warmer than our brethren up in the north would prefer, however we are quite comfortable with it.”
• Is it coastal or mountainous?
o “We were within a quarter-day walk of the coast. Sometimes I would be tasked with taking the young ones down to play for the day, as well as sing and tell them various stories of old.”
• Are the people Mostly Good, Mostly Neutral, or Mostly evil?
o “We lived next to Nuln, a wonderful country with great ideals. We had few worries that plagued us, and the ones that we could usually involved rounding up a few of us to put down some recent kobald infestation that had burrowed up.”
=== Family ===
• Who are your parents? Are they still alive?
o “I would assume they are still alive. It was rare where we lived for people to die of anything other than old age.”
• Are they rich? poor?
o “By general standards they would probably be fairly poor. We’re elves though, while we can certainly appreciate wealth, we also appreciate the simple joys of things crafted of our own hands as well. If we had ever even entertained a thought of selling the statue in the center of town, it might have fetched enough to bring decent riches to the townfolk.”
• Does the family have a good repuration? a sour one? Why?
o “Within our own we were well liked. I was a natural as a caretaker for the young ones until I grew up around fifty years old and had to go my way in the world. Ourside of our tiny microcosm of a village though, I doubt any would bat an eye at our family name.”
• Are there any famous or infamous ancestors?
o “Dear no. Humble born and humble buried.”
• Does the family hold its members to a particular system of ethics?
o “Father’s rule was simple: “Don’t do anything that you aren’t willing to own up to.”
• Does the family practice a particular religion?
o “The worship of Terrema was traditional in our village, and I was fairly well practicing, although I’m obviously a servant of The Melody.”
• What is the family's view of the government? Supporter? Revolutionary?
o “The government treated us well. They kept our little world safe and at peace, and we understood the importance of meeting our taxes, even if they stung a little sometimes.”
• Who holds the power in the family?
o “Grandfather rarely said a word that wasn’t grounded in deep wisdom. There was no need for power for his saying to be heeded.”
=== Instruction ===
• What sort of Education did the Character receive and from whom?
o “We had no formal schools that you urban children get to enjoy, but the elders kept a nice sized library for us. We are certainly not ignorant by any means. We know history and cultures and general news. We also knew the basic mechanics and mathematics needed to get around in life.”
• Has the character held any jobs/apprenticeships?
o “Before I found the spark of music, I was oddly enough being trained as a blacksmith. It’s why I keep this smithing hammer with me even though it hardly sees use these days. I still hold a level of respect for the profession, and sometimes miss having a piece of iron to work, even if I never really had the strength for the more strenuous things. I could make nails or shoes though.”
• How did the character come to be a member of their class?
o “I was always good with children, although I really wasn’t much older than them. Maybe twenty years or so. But I could still relate to their boundless recklessness yet knew when to rein it in for their safety. I was also a decent shot with a bow so I could protect them from the odd hostile creature on some of our field trips. Most of all, I loved to hum and sing, and dream up wild and silly stories for them to listen to when they needed settling down. My father saw something I was still ignorant of and on my forty-eighth birthday surprised me with a lovingly crafted violin. I took to it like a natural, and wore through two strings pretty quickly. It was only a little after I started noticing what had always been in the back of my head when I sang. I heard accompaniment. Music always sounded richer to me, even beyond what friends and family members always commented on as being wonderful playing. When I mentioned this to Father and Grandfather they laughed, commenting that while they couldn’t hear it, they could tell the Melody had been an accomplice in my songs for decades now. One of the songs I had ‘come up with’ years before had been the same as a well known bard who has visited long before I was born.”
=== Life Events ===
• What events shaped the characters life during childhood?
o “Err…I’m sorry, I got lost in a selfish story and went a little ahead.”
• Were there any pivotol events in the characters life? (i.e. events that if they had been settled in a different way, the character would not be who they are today)
o “Other than the gifting of my instrument, no. If I hadn’t received it, I’d probably be a singing blacksmith.”
=== Relationships ===
• How does the character feel toward their family, now and in the past?
o “I still hold deep respect for them, always have.”
• Does the character have siblings? If so, what is their relationship like?
o “A few. One brother that is much older than me, and two younger sisters.”
• Who are the character's Friends? Are they the type to forge few close relationships or many more distant ones? Is finding friends easy/difficult?
o See Aelyn_Charisma. “I am friends with all who will stay a while and listen.”
• Has the character made any rivals/enemies?
o See Aelyn_Charisma. “Perhaps, but none that I know by name.”
• Did your character have an instructor that played a role in their life? What is the relationship there?
o “No.”
• Is your character a follower of a particular diety? How does the character feel toward this entity?
o “The Melody and Terrema. I respect both, but differently. Terrema is a typical deity, limited interference and generally just observed traditionally. The Melody however, she is my accomplice, supporting all my songs that are dedicated to her, even though it is through her gift and guidance that all I do is possible.
