Main characters

Each playable character has a special move that is used often in the game.

Mario

Mario

His ability is to go from 2-D to 3-D, a process called "flipping". A special meter will appear and decrease in time and, eventually, hurt Mario. The special meter will disappear once the Mario catch card is in possesion, allowing him to stay in 3-D indefinitely.

Princess Peach

Princess Peach

Peach's ability is to float with her parasol, allowing her to cross large gaps that cannot be crossed by a normal jump. In addition, she can hide under her parasol, protecting herself from most attacks.

Bowser

Bowser

Bowser is able to breathe fire, which can be used to set objects aflame or attack enemies. His attack power is also twice that of the other party members.

Luigi

Luigi can crouch down, then shoot up to do a Super Jump. Any enemy above Luigi will get hurt. If Luigi hits the ceiling, he will simply float down; the player can move Luigi while floating.

Pixls

Pixls are mythical digital sprites whose destinies involve joining up with the heroes of legend. Once found, they give Mario special abilities. In total, there are 11 Pixls to be found, and 2 others (Tippi and Tiptron are not Pixls).

  • Tippi allows the player to point the Wii Remote at the screen like a spotlight. This spotlight can give more information about enemies, allies, items, and surroundings, similar to the Goombario and Goombella in past Paper Mario games. She can also reveal hidden objects.
  • Thoreau gives the power to pick up and throw enemies and objects. This can be compared to Koops's and Kooper's abilities in past games to get items.
  • Boomer can be placed like a bomb that leaves behind fire and dust, destroying normal blocks and cracked walls. This ability can be compared to Bombette and Admiral Bobbery from past Paper Mario games.
  • Slim allows the character to turn sideways and become paper thin, making it possible to slip between bars or other narrow places. When still, the player is invincible and cannot be harmed.
  • Thudley enables a ground-pound, which is useful for activating certain triggers.
  • Carrie acts as a floating platform that can carry the player across spiked hazards and also protects the character from jumping on spiked enemies. She can be compared to Lakilester from Paper Mario.
  • Fleep creates a user-guided frame around a patch of space which then flips around, revealing hidden items or switches.
  • Cudge allows the character to use a hammer similar to the past Paper Mario games, either to damage enemies or destroy obstacles.
  • Dottie shrinks the character to a smaller size to fit through passageways and visit the Itty-Bits shop. While in use, enemies will not be able to see the player.
  • Barry protects the character by using a shield and attacks enemies that touch it.
  • Piccolo plays a character's theme music and changes a few of the sound effects to those from Super Mario Bros.
  • Dashell will make the player run approximately twice his or her normal speed.
  • Tiptron is a robotic version of Tippi.

Friendly characters

Merlon

File:SPMMerlon.jpg
Merlon, as he appears in Super Paper Mario.

A mystic wizard who first appeared in the original Paper Mario. It is revealed that he hails from the realm between dimensions, Flipside. After finding out that Mario is the legendary hero, he gives advice to the stars as often as he can.

Merlee

She's a rhyming charmer that guards the 3rd Pure Heart. She lives in a swamp and most of Chapter 2 is spent searching her mansion. After being rescued from Mimi and giving the heroes the Pure Heart, she sets up residence in Flopside. She is the person that initiates the Piccolo sidequest.

Nolrem

The Flopside version of Merlon. He and Merlon, other than the heroes, are the only people that know that both Flipside and Flopside exist.

Jaydes

The queen of the Underwhere. When Mario brings the broken pure heart he received in Chapter 6, she offers to repair it if he will find her daughter first. She later asks Mario to aid her daughter Luvbi to the Overthere, where her husband, Grambi, resides. Her name 'Jaydes' is a play on word 'Hades', the name of the Greek god of the underworld.

Grambi

The king of the Overthere. When Mario escorts Luvbi to the Overthere from the Underwhere, the Overthere is found under siege by the worst of the Underwhere's inhabitants, with a majority of the Nimbis (the inhabitants of the Overthere) being trapped in ice. Nimbis are also the only non-playable characters in the Paper Mario Series that have successfully attacked and defeated a number of enemies, except for the Punis from Thousand Year Door.

Luvbi

The feisty daughter of Jaydes and Grambi, she runs away a lot to escape her overprotective parents. She does not know why her parents are so protective, but it is later revealed by Bonechill that she is really a Pure Heart, and Jaydes and Grambi made the Pure Heart into a living form to protect it. They admit that over time, they loved Luvbi and felt as if she was their real daughter. Luvbi speaks in Early Modern English (much like other Nimbis), and does not like Mario or Luigi, saying they are too old. She is very intrusive and knows love once she sees it. She constantly makes comments that Tippi has a crush on Mario.

Main villains

Count Bleck

Count Bleck is the primary antagonist. He has the tendency to speak in the narrative third person. His name is a combination of the words "Black" and "Blech". He is called "Count Noir" in Japan (French for "Black").

Nastasia

The assistant of Count Bleck, Nastasia follows him almost at all times. She seems to handle data and secretary duties for Bleck, as well as organize and punish the other minions in his absence. She also has very powerful hypnotic powers, often using on people to make them loyal to Count Bleck. She perpetually adjusts her glasses and has a speech pattern very similar to that of Bill Lumbergh from Office Space, often adding words such as "Yeah...", "Sorry", and "'K?" at the beginnings and ends of her sentences.

O'Chunks

O'Chunks has pledged his life and honor to Count Bleck. Mario and company face him on four different occasions. O'Chunks speaks in a very heavy Scottish accent, making his speech hard to follow for other characters. He also replaces many words with the word "Chunk" or some variant of it. He is called "Dodontasu" in Japan.

Mimi

A shapeshifting young girl that uses her doppleganger powers to get close to her enemies and attack when least expected. She has a tendency to speak in simple and childish terms and often acts like a child. She is called "Maneera" in Japan.

Dimentio

A sinister court jester and the major antagonist who serves Count Bleck. Although at first he seems to be another minion, he is actually the true villain in this game. Dimentio's name comes from the words "dementia", referring to his twisted personality, and "dimension", because he has the power to control various dimensions. He created his own miniature world called Dimension D. Dimentio's face resembles a classical theatrical comedy mask, reminiscent of the kind used in tragic and comedic theatrical plays, and his trademark is his exit line of "Ciao!".
