Player Name: Lacey ( orangewinters)

Player House: Ravenclaw

Character Name: Derek Percival Bly

Character Age: 15

If your character is a student - what year is s/he? 5th year

What kind of wand does your character possess? 13 inch Ash with a core of mermaid hair

Does your character own a broom? Which brand? Yes, he has a Comet.

Does your character have any special abilities? Derek is particularly skilled in Transfiguration and Defense Against the Dark Arts, these being his two favorite courses. He’s gifted with a natural intelligence and is the sort of person who doesn’t have to spend much time studying in order to achieve the scores he wants.

Describe your character’s flaws and magical weaknesses: Despite being a fast learner, Derek has a hard time putting much effort into things he’s not interested in. He has a tendency to get bored in some classes and only half of what a professor is saying will sink in while his quill scratches notes thoughtlessly. Although he can manage most any spell at his level, he doesn’t bother to put any more effort into mastering them than he deems necessary. He’s only passable in Charms for this very reason, finding it less challenging, and therefore less interesting than other courses.

Describe your character's physical attributes: Derek is of average height for his age, being neither especially tall nor short. He has dark blue eyes, framed by the black hair which is often falling into them. He has an appearance of always lounging, whether he be sitting in the common room slumped comfortably in a chair, researching in the library leaning his head on one hand, or simply leaning on his desk in class.

Is your character Muggle born, a half breed, half-blood, or a pureblood? Explain it. Derek’s grandmother on his father’s side is a muggle, which means Derek is not quite pureblood, and not quite half-blood. One of his aunts (his father’s younger sister, Shelby) is also a muggle (or a squib, based on your point of view) but the rest of his family is from the wizarding world.

Character Background/History: Derek is an only child, his parents having deemed that one was enough. His father, Canderous Bly, grew up in a mixed household, his mother and one of his sisters’ being muggles, and his father and older sister being magical. Because of his upbringing, Mr. Bly appreciates the importance of maintaining order between the two worlds, and he works in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts division of the Ministry. Derek’s mother, Nanine Faybrooke-Bly, is from a pureblood family who’s prestige has diminished over the years. She too was an only child, which makes Derek the Faybrooke’s favorite, if only, grandchild. Mrs. Bly also does work for the Ministry, working in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Dark Creatures. Despite being an only child, Derek grew up relatively unspoiled, or as near as an only child can come to it. He was rarely wanting for anything, but his parents didn’t let their love excuse him from structure and responsibility. Holidays have always been an interesting affair, mixing muggle and wizarding relatives together for a few hectic days. As a child, Derek always found it odd to visit Grandma Bly, who despite having married a wizard, retained a number of muggle habits and did odd things like knit sweaters by hand. Aunt Shelby, with her muggle family, was even stranger. Having no magical spouse to take care of odd jobs, she was always doing things the hard, non-magical way. As Derek’s muggle cousins have grown older, the Blys have seen less and less of Aunt Shelby, and when they do see her, they are obliged to refrain from using magic as per her request, lest it confuse the children. Being the only non-magical product of a half-blood marriage, Shelby doesn’t want her family to feel inadequate as she did at times in her youth. Derek dislikes having to hide his abilities and “pass” as muggle when in mixed company and after a holiday visit with non-magical relatives, he wants nothing more than to return home to his parents or the Faybrookes; somewhere wholly magical. He gets on quite well with his other aunt, Rosalyn, and her sons who taught Derek to ride a boom so they could play Quidditch together.
