The Republic of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations (usually abbreviated RIPP) is a small country on the western shore of the Crystal Sea. It has a small but prosperous service and financial-based economy. Its capital is Providence.
Geography
The country covers an area of approximately 3,144 km² and is bordered on the north and east by Massachusetts Bay, on the west by New Netherland, part of the Philadelphian Union, and on the south by Rhode Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. It shares a water border with New York. The mean elevation is 200 feet (60 m). Rhode Island has two distinct natural regions: Eastern Rhode Island contains the lowlands of the Narragansett Bay, while Western Rhode Island forms part of the New England Upland.
The country consists of a mainland part, Providence Plantations, the site of the capital Providence, and an insular part of over 30 islands in Narragansett Bay. The largest is Rhode Island itself, shared by the municipalities of Newport, Rhode Island, Middletown, and Portsmouth. Among the other islands in the Bay are Hope Island and Prudence Island.
RIPP is mostly flat with no real mountains. RIPP's highest natural point is Jerimoth Hill, only 812 feet (247 m) above sea level. Its coastline features numerous beaches, contributing to a resort industry.
RIPP is an example of a warm summer humid continental climate with hot rainy summers and cold snowy winters. The highest temperature recorded in RIPP was 105F (40°C), recorded on August 2, 1975 at Providence. The lowest temperature in RIPP, -13 °F (-25 °C), was recorded on February 6, 1996 at Greene. Monthly average temperatures range from a high of 82 °F (28 °C) to a low of 20 °F (-7 °C).
