North America is a continent in the northern and western hemispheres of Earth. The large landmass is bounded to the west by the Pacific Ocean, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, to the north by the Arctic Ocean, and to the south by the Caribbean Sea.

The continent is heavily indented by major seas. The Iberville Sea separates Rupert's Land from the Ungava Peninsula to the north, while the Davis Strait separates the Nunavut Archipelago from the huge island of Kalaalit Nunaat to the northeast. To the west, the Western Sea, an arm of the Pacific, separates Rupert's Land from California, dividing the Rocky Mountains from the Sierras in an area of great instability. In the east, the Labrador Peninsula and Newfoundland Peninsula are divided by the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, while the Newfoundland Peninsula and the mainland are divided by the Crystal Sea.

Originally inhabited by the First Nations and Inuit, the continent was heavily colonized from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries by the United Kingdom, France, Spain, the Netherlands, and Russia, though much of the northern parts of the continent have returned to aboriginal control. Today, the continent is divided between the following states:

  • Department of Île Saint-Jude (an overseas department of France)
  • Overseas Territory of Bermuda (an overseas territory of the United Kingdom)
