La Luz is the capital city of Mar de Cristal, located at the western tip of the Newfoundland Peninsula at 36°14' N, 68°46' W. Its territory is the Mar de Cristal Distrito Federal. It borders the comarcas of San Gabriel and Costa Moscada and is adjacent to Île Saint-Jude, an overseas department of France.
The city proper, i.e. the federal district, has a population of 270,662; but the entire agglomeration has a population of more than 2.5 million, including multiple densely developed suburbs.
It is crossed by the Río de la Luz and Río Rosado. Most of the northwestern part of the city was built on land reclaimed from the delta of the Río de la Luz, called the Pántano de las Aguas Torcidas. Owing to frequent floods, the delta was drained and the flow of the river redirected through the Canal de Regulación de La Luz to the north of the city. Surrounded by the current river channel are the Isla de la Ballena and Isla Hijo de Dios.
The city's Vieja Ciudad is the oldest settlement in Mar de Cristal. The area now administered by the municipality formerly contained several distinct towns, including the villages of Sant Jordi dels Gerdons or San Jorge de las Frambuesas (now the Poble Català), Aguas Torcidas, and San José de Atocha.
