  • Stoke Newington Reservoirs: 2 Wigeon (first of autumn), 10 Chiffchaffs, 4 Willow Warblers, 22 Meadow Pipits (mostly W), Reed Bunting, 36 Shoveler (Mark Pearson & Tony Butler Hackney Wildlife).
  • Hackney Marshes: Whinchat, 3 Yellow Wagtails, 2 Meadow Pipits, 2 Siskins (Paul Cook via MJP)
  • Waterworks NR: 1 Common Snipe, 4 Wigeon, 15 Teal, Willow Warbler (Paul Cook via MJP)

Sunday 14th September

  • Hythe End (Wraysbury): Osprey flew fairly rapidly south, then headed off SW at 11.20hrs (Andrew Moon, Pete Naylor).
  • Lake Farm (Hayes): Male Common Redstart, 1 Whinchat, 5+ Willow Warblers (Andrew Moon, Pete Naylor).
  • West Molesey: large dark raptor making slow progress westwards along Thames at 16:45. No scope unfortunately! (Adam Cheeseman).
  • Bedfont Lakes CP: belated report of a Bittern seen two weekends ago by a very reliable observer (Adam Cheeseman).
  • Hook/Chessington: dark morph Honey Buzzard south west @15.20 (Geoff Barter/Nit Lawrence), another Buzzard sp south @16.55 (Geoff Barter).
  • Rainham Marshes: fem Common Scoter in Aveley Bay 12:10hrs, Honey-buzzard NE 11:00hrs, Marsh Warbler in woodland 08:30hrs but no recent sign (Birdguides).
  • Twickenham: Honey-buzzard SE over Marble Hill 13:45hrs (Birdguides).
  • Clissold Park: Honey-buzzard north 14:50hrs; also 15 Siskins, 6 Meadow Pipits, 31 Swallows, 4 House Martins, 3 Sand Martins, 2 Common Gulls north (Mark Pearson Hackney Wildlife).
  • Paddington Green: Honey-buzzard (very dark bird) drifting south 15:20hrs, probable Osprey very high NE 14:14hrs (couldn't clinch it), 3 Sparrowhawk (1-2m/1f), fem Kestrel, 3 Hobby (2 juv) south, (06:50hrs, 14:30hrs, 15:13hrs), m Peregrine in area between 14:30hrs-16:00hrs; also, 2 Egyptian Goose SW, 36 Cormorant SW, 2 Stock Dove, 58 Swallow (mainly south), 12 House Martin, 7 Meadow Pipit SW, Siskin south 07:08hrs, Grey Wagtail (Des McKenzie).
  • Cheshunt: pale-morph Honey-buzzard SE over Cadmore Lane 15:55hrs (Roy Woodward).
  • East Tilbury: 2 probable Honey-buzzard high west (heading in toward London) c11:15hrs (David Darrell-Lambert per DMc).
  • Alexandra Park: Osprey north over reservoir 07:35hrs (Andrew Gardener), Wood Warbler still in Blandford Hall birchwood south of the deer enclosure at 12:30 (Bob Watts) and again at 14:45 (Andrew Gardener) 5 Yellow Wagtail, Whinchat, 75+ Swallows, 40+ Meadow Pipits, 24 Siskin, Hobby SW 1730(Bob Watts, Gareth Richards, John Murray, Stuart Harrington, Andrew Gardener).
  • Leyton: Osprey SW 08:12hrs; 15:50 two birds seen, thermalling, far to the south-west, possibly Honey Buzzards. At 16:14 a Honey Buzzard flew straight towards the house from the North, circled and went off south-west (Paul Whiteman).
  • Kentish Town: Osprey SE 13:00hrs (Birdguides).
  • Wormwood Scrubs: Osprey west fairly low down (site tick), 3 Whinchat, c12 Yellow Wagtail, 1 Grey Wagtail, c110 Meadow Pipit, 1 immature Sedge Warbler, c3 Blackcap, c2 Whitethroat, c2 Chiffchaff, c6 Swallow, 1 Stock Dove, c6 Jackdaw & c8 Jay (David Lindo & Roy Nuttall).
  • London Wetland Centre: Red Kite west 10:55hrs, Guillemot on Thames by rail bridge 10:45hrs (Birdguides).
  • Kensington Gardens: Common Buzzard over north end of Longwater 13:50hrs (Fraser Simpson per DMc).
  • King George V Res: Sparrowhawk, Common Buzzard, 2 Hobby; also, 3 Ruddy Duck, Little Egret, 2 Common Sandpiper, Common Tern, 12 Yellow Wagtail, Northern Wheatear, and 3 Ruddy Ducks (Roy Woodward).
  • Totteridge Valley: 1 Buzzard drifting W, 3 Sparrowhawks, 11 Meadow Pipits, 10 Swallows, 1 House Martin, 2 Blackcaps, 1 Whitethroat & 8 Chiffchaff (John Colm).
  • Beechwood Avenue (Greenford): pr thermalling Sparrowhawks, 6 Swallow south (Neil Anderson).
  • Chiswick: Guillemot on Thames by Kew Bridge 11:58hrs (Birdguides); same bird as below; it won't be able to drift upstream beyond Richmond because of the lock (Franco Maroevic per DMc) - still on the Thames at 13:19hrs drifting past Syon House (Isleworth) (Birdguides).
  • Thames (Putney-Barnes Bridges WeBS): Guillemot (Dukes Meadow area 9.30-10.00 at least), 3 Gtc Grebe, 44 Cormorant, 17 Heron, 10 Mute Swan, 367 Mallard, 45 Teal (Neil Anderson).
  • William Girling Res: 2 Goldeneye, 24 Black-necked Grebe (viewable from Mansfield Hill), 8 Little Egret (channels at SE corner, viewed from Russel Road footpath), 2 Greenshank, 13 Green Sandpipers, 2 Common Sandpiper (Roy Woodward).

  • Staines Res (evening): Garganey N basin, two Ruff flew round late on, 4 Black Terns, 1 Little Gull. Earlier the four Sandwich Terns seen over Wraysbury Res 1710-1730hrs at least (Rob Innes).

  • Dartford: 2 Osprey south over the west side at 17:10 (Birdguides)
  • Rainham Marshes: Honey-buzzard west 15:50hrs (Birdguides).
  • London Wetland Centre: Osprey present 14:15hrs to 14:35hrs at least, 4 Arctic Skua south 15:15hrs (Birdguides), 4 Hobby (2 juvs) hunting high together over reedbed area early a.m., Kingfisher, 61 Swallow, 16 Meadow Pipit, 2 Yellow Wagtail, Northern Wheatear, 2 Sedge Warbler, Reed Warbler, 4 Blackcap, at least 20 Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, Spotted Flycatcher (LWC website).

  • Bromley-by-Bow: Osprey seen soaring low over River Lea at c11.00am (in the area for at least 10 minutes being mobbed by Lesser Black backed Gulls), Common Sandpiper, Tree Pipit over, 4 Meadow Pipit over, 5 Mistle Thrush (2 Siskin over yesterday) (LondonBirders Yahoo Group).

  • Alexandra Park: Yellow Wagtail SW @ 0656, 1 Mipit 0650-0710, 3 Chiffchaffs (Bob Watts), Pied Flycatcher briefly 0900 Blanford Hall with 2 Spotted Flycatchers in the birch adjacent to transmitter (Andrew Gardener, Dominic Mitchell), Wood Warbler briefly in with LTT flock between Rose Garden and Animal Enclosures 1000 (Andrew Gardener); 112th species for site for the year.   • Richmond Park: Honey Buzzard over the northwest corner at 10:15, departed SW at 10.45 (Birdguides).
  • Wormwood Scrubs: Honey Buzzard over southwest being escorted by c120 crows at 8.50am. It was a dark morph flying low over rooftops with languid wingbeats. When it glided its wings were gently bowed. Had kite-like jizz, not as bulky as Common Buzzard and seemed to have a narrow head; also 2 Whinchat, c8 Whitethroat & c30 Meadow Pipits (David Lindo).
  • Alexandra Park: Tree Pipit flew from scrub to perimeter and then landed again in grassland to west at 0705 before being flushed from perimeter at 0830.   • Staines Reservoirs: Great Skua on south basin then flew west at 15:50; also drake Common Scoter on north basin late afternoon and 5 Black Terns (Birdguides).
  • Rainham Marshes RSPB: Great White Egret flew southeast, across River Thames at 10:20 but no sign of the Aquatic Warbler (Birdguides).
  • Beech Farm GPs: Osprey over Beech Farm at 07:45 heading towards St. Albans (Birdguides).
  • Rotherhithe: 32 Black Terns came in from the east over River Thames, then circled at mouth of Greenland Dock 6.53-6.57pm before heading high south. My 1st record for the site (Richard Bonser).
  • Crossness: 3 Black Terns still off outfall by the Thamesview Golf Centre this morning; also a Knot (Birdguides).
  • East India Dock (2 visits - a.m. & p.m.): 5 Black Terns with many commic terns distantly off West Silvertown until 15:30, plus 9 Common Terns, Common Sandpiper, 4 Yellow-legged Gulls, 2 Reed Warblers (in copse), Sparrowhawk, 17 Teal (David Callahan).
