Full story: HP Researchers Working on "Greener" Data Centre (27-Oct-07)

As data centres continue to grow, bringing new challenges, they are becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. HPs Systems Technology Software Division (STSD) lab have developed an innovative software tool to help companies get a macro view of their data centres. This should enable the corporation to gauge the use of their resources, automate management and recreate different situations to find problems. At present this tool is being used internally, but is felt by HP that this is the computer company’s answer to a “green data centre”.

MANILA, Philippines -- Maintaining large and growing data centers is becoming a difficult task, enterprise computer researchers have discovered.

For one, there is an evident need for more power and cooling technology to keep systems up and running, according to researchers at Systems Technology Software Division (STSD), a research and development organization of computer company HP in Bangalore, India.

"With increasing variation of hardware and operating systems, standardization and management is becoming more of a challenge," said Sankar Gopal, a researcher at the STSD in Bangalore.

Citing studies from IDC, Gopal said amid all the power requirements to run data centers, 10 to 30 percent of data centers are only utilized, leading to power wastage.

There is also a huge divide in mindset in the development of technologies now running within data centers. Thus, maintenance of heterogeneous computing environments is problematic because each technology requires a different set of tools to manage, Gopal said.

HP's STSD has been conducting real-time tests of data centers, subjecting various heterogeneous environments to "stress tests."

Out of these tests, the STSD lab has developed an innovative software tool, dubbed Maya, which helps companies get a macro view of their data centers, allowing them to gauge the use of their resources, automate management, and recreate different situations to find problems.

Maya, however, is still being used internally by HP's researchers at STSD, but they stressed that it is the computer company's answer to a “green data center.”

The commercial release of this software tool is not yet known.

According to researchers at STDS, Maya is an Indian term that describes an "illusion" or "magic."
