History

Paul Brattain was born December 28, 1801 in Randolph County, North Carolina to Benjamin Franklin Brattain and Mary (Hill). Paul went with his family to Tennessee at an early age and at 16 went overland and by boat to Hancock and Morgan Counties in Illinois (jcb). There, he was active in politics and was elected to the constitutional convention of Illinois (jcb). He moved the family to Van Buren County, Iowa about 1838 where he continued to be active in politics (jcb). The family left Iowa for Oregon in 1852 following two children who had moved west in 1849 and 1850 (jcb). Paul arrived in Oregon from Iowa in 1852 and was a farmer in Lane County. He was a Republican representative of Lane County in the 1857 Constitutional Convention Of Oregon held in Salem August 17 to September 18, 1857. The other representatives for the county were William W. Bristow (Democrat), Enoch Hoult (Republican), Enoch, Isaac R Moores (Democrat), and Jess Cox (Democrat).

In 1826, he married Elizabeth Martha (CARTER) in Illinois, born March 16 (jg) or May (alr) 1805 KY (jg) or Morgan Co., IL (alr), died 1846 Iowa (lch). Said to have later married Elizabeth CARTER and had a child 1853 (u) (neither in 1860 census) but this seems to be a misreading of records (cms). and had 10 children.

He died August 20, 1883 at age 82. He is buried in the IOOF Pioneer Cemetery in the University of Oregon.

Oregon brought possibility-heartbrreak to settlers

By Kris Redmond.

Aging letters can teach us a lot about history and the lives of early settlers. The Springfield Museum's archives possess a collection of 10 letters from the Brattain family, some of the earliest settlers in the Willamette Valley...

...His sons, Alfred and Will, corresponded with friends in Iowa between 1875 and 1905, leaving a clue to their attitudes about the region.

In 1875, Alfred Brattain wrote a letter describing his family's move to Oregon from Iowa. He said, we "traveled Fairfield to Springfield in 15 days," referring to the trip from California to Portland and Eugene by train.

He went on: "Alex this is pretty nice country, the only objection is there is not enough of it or there is too much of it mountains. The valleys is very nice and rich but there are very few chances to buy farms as people who own farms generally seem to be satisfied and all think they have the best farm in the valley."

Will Brattain saw the country differently.

Will moved to Washington Territory as an adult and continued there the rest of his life. He wrote in 1905 that he had been to visit his brother Alfred in Oregon, just before his death.

He wrote, "(My) wife and I visited the Lewis and Clark fair at Portland as we returned home and had a very pleasant time. We took Steamer at Portland for the Dalles, Oregon that I might again view the crags of the Columbia and get an occasional glimpse of the 'old trail' over which we forced our worn and half starved cattle in (18)52. The day was pleasant and the scenery to me is always grand and inspriing. Yet it was not all joy for me for I could not help but think of the havoc death that wrought in our family since we passed through the Columbia gorge 53 years ago. Our family then numbered eleven we are now five."

Children
