  • East India Dock: 2 Blackcap (m+f), Chiffchaff, 2 Grey Wagtail, Yellow-legged Gull, LInnet, 2 Kingfisher, 6 Greenfinch, 60+ Teal (Paul Hyland).

Monday 15th September

  • Pinner Park Farm: Wryneck at 17:20hrs TQ135905 (Birdguides).
  • London Wetland Centre: ad m Marsh Harrier SW 09:40hrs, 6 Common Buzzard (3 NE and singles SE, SW and west), 3 Sparrowhawk (m/2f), m Kestrel, 2 Hobby (ad/juv), 2 Peregrine (m/f); also, Little Egret, Common Snipe, Swallow (light passage), Meadow Pipit (light passage) (LWC website).
  • West Thurrock : 2 Yellow-legged Gulls, 16 Ringed Plovers, 2 Curlew, 3 Bar-tailed Godwit, Black-tailed Godwit, 55 Swallow, 3 Hobbies, 3 Sparrowhawks, Marsh Harrier, 4 Tree Pipits, 2 Sandwich Tern, 27 Common Tern, Grey Seal and 8 Siskin (Dave Morrison).
  • Cheshunt: dark Common Buzzard south 09:55hrs, buzzard spp. south 10:10hrs, 2 Hobby (north at 10:12hrs and distant bird south a few minutes later), typically marked Common Buzzard and intermediate Honey-buzzard circling together to the NW between 10:55hrs and c11:15hrs along with a, higher, third buzzard spp; all three gained height drifting south (LondonBirders Yahoo Group).
  • Waterworks NR: 1 Common Snipe, 4 Wigeon, 15 Teal, Willow Warbler (Paul Cook via MJP), Honey-buzzard low south 10:25hrs, 6 Little Egret, Common Sandpiper, 5 Swallow, Chiffchaff (Gary A James, Mike Messenger).
  • Alexandra Park: Honey-buzzard south of Alexandra Palace flew SW 18:13hrs, another probable dark phase headed east 17.52 and a Common Buzzard seen east at 17.32. Also Sakar/Lanner hybrid over the palace. This is my 104th species seen in & from the park and the 113th for APOG matching the best ever total of 2007 (John Murray & Bob Watts). Early Am Chiffchaff showing signs of Abietinus (Scandanavian) in the scrub (B.Watts, J.Murray, A.Gardner).
  • Amwell: Osprey SW 07:25hrs (HertsBirding).

  • Beddington SF: Madagascar Teal (esc), Common Buzzard, Ruff, 2 Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, c30 Swallow, 3 Yellow Wagtail (Dip or Glory).
  • City of London: Buzzard sp (prob common), gliding SSW and then thermalling high, at 11.45am. Viewed at distance from Canary Wharf, bird prob above Whitechapel/Shoreditch area (J Lethbridge).
  • Paddington Green: Hobby SW 12:21hrs, Peregrine high SW 12:30hrs and another in the area for 10 minutes around 17:15hrs, 16 Meadow Pipit WSW, 18 Swallow south, c200 Starling, Migrant Hawker (Des McKenzie).

  • Rainham Marshes: Honey-buzzard NE 11:00hrs, fem Common Scoter in Aveley Bay 12:10hrs, Marsh Warbler in woodland 08:30hrs but no recent sign (Birdguides).
  • East Tilbury: 2 probable Honey-buzzard high west (heading in toward London) c11:15hrs (David Darrell-Lambert per DMc).

  • Thames at Limehouse: Peregrine (with jesses) perching on various flats (Paul Hyland).
  • Thames (Putney-Barnes Bridges WeBS): Guillemot (Dukes Meadow area 9.30-10.00 at least), 3 Gtc Grebe, 44 Cormorant, 17 Heron, 10 Mute Swan, 367 Mallard, 45 Teal (Neil Anderson).
  • Chiswick: Guillemot on Thames by Kew Bridge 11:58hrs (Birdguides); same bird as above reports; it won't be able to drift upstream beyond Richmond because of the lock (Franco Maroevic per DMc) - still on the Thames at 13:19hrs drifting past Syon House (Isleworth) (Birdguides).

  • Bromley-by-Bow: Osprey seen soaring low over River Lea at c11.00am (in the area for at least 10 minutes being mobbed by Lesser Black backed Gulls), Common Sandpiper, Tree Pipit over, 4 Meadow Pipit over, 5 Mistle Thrush (2 Siskin over yesterday) (LondonBirders Yahoo Group).

  • Richmond Park: Honey Buzzard over the northwest corner at 10:15, departed SW at 10.45 (Birdguides).
  • Wormwood Scrubs: Honey Buzzard over southwest being escorted by c120 crows at 8.50am. It was a dark morph flying low over rooftops with languid wingbeats. When it glided its wings were gently bowed. Had kite-like jizz, not as bulky as Common Buzzard and seemed to have a narrow head; also 2 Whinchat, c8 Whitethroat & c30 Meadow Pipits (David Lindo).
  • Alexandra Park: Tree Pipit flew from scrub to perimeter and then landed again in grassland to west at 0705 before being flushed from perimeter at 0830. Lanner/Saker type hybrid around Palace building for 20 minutes 0725-0745. (Bob Watts, Andrew Gardener). Wheatear on and around cricket pavilion to 0910 at least (Andrew Gardener, Gareth Richards) Lanner/Saker again c.0830 (Stuart Harrington).

Tuesday 9th September

  • Staines Reservoirs: Great Skua on south basin then flew west at 15:50; also drake Common Scoter on north basin late afternoon and 5 Black Terns (Birdguides).
  • Rainham Marshes RSPB: Great White Egret flew southeast, across River Thames at 10:20 but no sign of the Aquatic Warbler (Birdguides).
  • Beech Farm GPs: Osprey over Beech Farm at 07:45 heading towards St. Albans (Birdguides).
  • Rotherhithe: 32 Black Terns came in from the east over River Thames, then circled at mouth of Greenland Dock 6.53-6.57pm before heading high south. My 1st record for the site (Richard Bonser).
  • Crossness: 3 Black Terns still off outfall by the Thamesview Golf Centre this morning; also a Knot (Birdguides).
  • East India Dock (2 visits - a.m. & p.m.): 5 Black Terns with many commic terns distantly off West Silvertown until 15:30, plus 9 Common Terns, Common Sandpiper, 4 Yellow-legged Gulls, 2 Reed Warblers (in copse), Sparrowhawk, 17 Teal (David Callahan).
  • Belvedere: 1st-winter Mediterranean Gull at outfall; also 2 Wheatears (Birdguides).
  • Alexandra Park: 3 Yellow Wagtails, c5 Meadow Pipits, Whinchat, at least 4 Spotted Flycatchers, 25 Siskin (Bob Watts, Andrew Gardener, Dominic Mitchell, John Murray).
