Julien was born in Cuba. As a young man, he married an American citizen to attain citizenship for himself. Once he was granted citizenship, the marriage was annulled on grounds that she cheated on him. She didn't. They never had sex, even. It was a marriage for his citizenship, only.
Julien went on to find work on cruise ships, and by fate has ended up on the same ship as his exwife.
