It is a good idea to fully upgrade weapons research when you have the opportunity. However, what is the right time to upgrade when resources are tight? The charts below outline the point at which a given upgrade will increase the total attack+defense of your army more than simply spending the resources on additional troops. However, this advice should only be taken speculatively, as it makes some assumptions which may not necessarily apply to you.

Archer
The chart below shows the point at which upgrading Bow increases total atk+def more than spending the equivalent amount on additional Archers.

Spearfighter
The chart below shows the point at which upgrading Shield and Spear increases total atk+def more than spending the equivalent amount on additional Spearfighters. Assuming that the benefit of single upgrades in either attack or defense are equivalent, the most cost effective order for upgrading is somewhat asymmetrical. That is, Shield Level 4 is cheaper than Spear Level 2, so you would upgrade them in that order.
Caveats
- These charts assumes Gold production is the main limitation on the expansion of your army. (By the time one can build large numbers of troops this is generally, but not always, the case.)
- These charts also ignore the possibility that you will want to upgrade and train troops simultaneously. (You may well decide the most resource efficient time is not the most convenient to your particular needs.)
- I derived these figures out of curiosity and for my own use. They should not be taken as hard fact until someone else checks my math. (If you do so, please make a note on the discussion page, and feel free to delete this message.)
