Fred Phelps is an extremely fundamentalist christian, who founded his own church in Topeka, Kansas. He and his followers are known for their relentless and violent homophobia. Phelps, among other things, orchestrated picketing the funeral of Matthew Shepard and those of several American soldiers who died in the Iraq war.
