On October 26, 1934, Dolores Modica was born to Rose and Mario Modica at the Kingston City Hospital. She was raised on a farm in Sawkill until 1950, when her parents then built a home in Kingston. Dolores graduated from Kingston High in 1952, and went to work in a bakery for 4 months. When she turned 18 she went to work at IBM. She worked for IBM until she retired from World Trade in 1990.
Growing up, some of her fondest memories were of going to Norwich to see her grandparents, Maria and Nicola Elia. Given that she always got car sick on the long drive, it was difficult but the destination made the suffering all worthwhile. She could remember seeing Grandpa always sitting in his chair by the window and Grandma and Aunt Mary would be doing the cooking. She could remember coming downstairs early in the morning and seeing Grandma with her long hair down and combing it to put it up in a bun.
Upon leaving Norwich after a visit Grandma would always give Dolores a dollar or two and that she would put in the bank in school.
She also remembers going over to see Aunt Angela who would be waiting at the door for her to come and the big dining room table laden with food.
In later years, on February 4, 1956, she married George Stokes and they had two children, Darlene and Salena.
George Stokes
George Stokes was born on November 27, 1933 to Herman Stokes and Luella Hornbeck Stokes. He was one of three children.
He was raised in Accord and graduated from Allensville High in 1952. In 1954 he was drafted in the Army where he served in the desert setting of the atomic bombs. He was discharged in 1956.
When he got out of the service he went in business with his father operating a car service station. In 1970, George sold the business and went to work for a Cheverolet dealer and in 1972 he went to work for New York City in Shokan, NY, until his demise in 1992.
George was a devoted husband and a wonderful father. His greatest passions, aside from his family, were cars and boats.
