Angelo was the seventh child of Maria and Nicola Elia and was born in Norwich, NY, on March 17, 1915. He grew up and attended school there until he moved to Elizabeth, NJ. In Elizabeth, Angelo attended barber school while working for his cousin, Joe Ocello. He then returned to Norwich and worked in a barber shop.
In the meantime, he corresponded with Katherine Adornetto who lived in Hoboken and would visit her every couple of weeks by train. They met as children when Katie's parents would visit the Elias' on summer vacations to Norwich and they told each other that someday they were going to get married. Eventually, Angelo did marry Katherine in Hoboken, NJ on October 11, 1936. The Elias settled in Norwich for a couple of years and then moved on to Hoboken, NJ and North Bergen, NJ, where they lived until the early 1980's.
Angelo and Katherine had three children: Nicholas (who died shortly after birth), Mary and Rose. Angelo worked many years for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad before he opened his own barber shop in Hoboken. When men started to let their hair grow long he gave up the barber shop and went to work for the US Postal Service. Angelo retired from the USPS in 1980 and moved to Whiting, NJ to live on land his father had given him. Angelo loved to golf, work in the garden, and played the mandolin and guitar. He died on July 8, 1998, in his daughter's home in Ocean, NJ.
Katherine Elia
Katherine was the third child of Rosa and Joseph Adornetto and was born in Hoboken, NJ on September 11, 1914. Being the only girl in the family she was spoiled by her two brothers, Charlie and Mike. She grew up and attended public school in Hoboken. Except for a few years in Norwich she spent most of her life in Hoboken, North Bergen and Whiting, NJ, being a homemaker and taking care of Angelo, their two daughters and also enjoying her three grandchildren. While living in Hoboken she got to know the Sinatra Family and remembers Frank Sinatra playing in her brother's band. She loved sewing and cooking. When Angelo died in July of 1998, she moved to a nursing home in Eatontown, NJ, where she presently resides.
