Magic is indistinguishable from sufficiently advanced technology<strike>indistinguishable from sufficiently advanced technology to the untrained eye, though the two usually work quite differently.
Magic is usually divided into assorted schools, colors, disciplines, or other categories. How many categories depends on the nature of both the magic and the universe one is working in. The number of magical categories often the "magic number" of that universe. These categories usually include a "light" or "white" discipline and a "dark" or "black" discipline, though this can also vary from universe to universe.
How magic is performed varies wildly, not just between universes, but also between different forms of magic in the same universe. Similar spell effects may require entirely different materials, incantations, and other components.
Magic consumes MP, spirit energy, ki, or some similar energy. It can also use Physical energy, or calories. This is why most mages are fit for no discernible reason. Ones that haven't are largly from groups that either don't, or can't.
